Reader's Guide to the Silmarillion

I don't recommend this for two reasons:
First, as a reader's guide, one would expect it to clarify the material. It doesn't. It's largely a retelling in the author's own not especially wonderful style, with only a brief nod to thematic and source material. I don't think this is going to help readers understand the book.
More importantly, the book is full of inaccuracies! The author has chosen to "characterize" characters like Maedhros and Beren, giving his own idea of what's going on in their heads--characterizations that are unsupported in the text. "Maedhros' mind was in a turmoil", things like that. One can make such interpretations in terms of one's personal understanding of the text, but they are not in fact explicit in Tolkien's words. And there are literal inaccuracies, mostly small, but annoying -- "elfin" for "elven", the assertion that none of Feanor's sons were married (not the case), and so on. It's clear that the author isn't familiar with Christopher Tolkien's exegeses, but even allowing for that he has not represented the published Silmarillion text accurately here.

Great for casual readers - not scholars of Tolkien

This is less a scholarly work - and more an overview (i.e. like Cliff Notes) for casual readers of Tolkien who don't have the time or devotion to really delve into Tolkien's seminal Middle Earth corpus - the Silmarillion.

About the Author

Alexandra Aikhenvald has been Professor of Linguistics at the Australian National University since 1994. She was a Research Fellow at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR 198089, and Professor of Linguistics at the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil, until 1994. Her books include A Structural and Typological Classification of Berber (Moscow 19867, in 3 parts) and Modern Hebrew (Moscow 1990).

‘Build your business’ is an invaluable book for any established business owner looking to take their business to the next level. The book covers the six areas Dawson and McDonald have found make the biggest impact on organisational performance based on over 40 years of combined business and consulting experience, and their advice is backed up with client case studies and research that demonstrate how the ideas they recommend work in the real world.

While the book as a whole was full of insights and ‘ah ha!’ moments, I found the discussion on organisational politics to be particularly enlightening. Despite being an avid reader of business books, I hadn’t come across such an in-depth discussion on organisational politics before, including clear advice on how to manage them. For that alone, this book was worth a read.

If you’re a business owner looking to take your organisation from ordinary to extraordinary, I highly recommend ‘Build your business’.

This is an impressive and very readable book!

This is an impressive and very readable book! I can’t speak with the experience of running a company, but I can speak with the experience of running a postgraduate degree in Risk Management. This book is one I wish I had had for the students, most of whom were mature-age managers. It would have shown them, with minimum pain, how to build a trusting, supportive team and empower it with an understanding of the culture surrounding them. That is, get their job done harmoniously!

It has influenced my thinking on the culture of my business and given me some great advice and tools that I will continue to implement in any business venture. This isn't a book for big business only so practicable to all sizes and industries. Must read.

A Long List of Useful Models

I checked this book out of our company library and was somewhat surprised. The book is basically a list of patterns, similar to the software pattern books popular about a decade ago. Each pattern is a couple of pages long, and contains a small amount of text followed by a template (or two) for a model. The entire book is a series of models.

What makes the models useful is that it provides literally dozens of different models as templates that can be used in your organization to illustrate everything from strategic alignment to sequenced initiatives. The wide array provides many different visualization styles for any one set of concerns. This should stimulate thought and provide some much-needed guidance for an architect in a hurry who needs to visualize his or her data.

The book is not a tutorial on EA or BA. It provides no insight into methods or processes for developing the models, or how to collect the information in a consistent manner. That is not what this book is for. It is a useful resource to let you know what models you may want to consider.

For all it's length, it is not comprehensive. There are some models that I need, and use on a regular basis, with no parallel in this book. That said, MOST of what an architect needs to visualize data in a model is present in the book with enough explanation that you can take it from there. All in all, a useful desk resource for any practicing Business Architect or Enterprise Architect.
