well worth it!

Bought these for my granddaughter as she entered kindergarten and was interested in learning to read. Now after her first year she is able to read several of the books on her own. She needed the classroom instruction regarding word attack, looking for picture clues etc. She definitely enjoys them and never tires of reading and rereading. She's now trying to teach her younger sister!

I was disappointed in the overall look at packaging

I was disappointed in the overall look at packaging. The books are very small and numerous and thus one taken out of the wrapping thye can be easily misplaced. The paper quality is not very good or suitable for a small child who is not always very gentle. However, the contents are very good.

Great set of learn to read books to grow with.

These books are great for my little daughter to improve her reading. The books are small and thin, which works well for her, so she doesn’t feel overwhelmed. Each book is pretty short with only 8 pages so it doesn’t feel like work and helps boost her confidence. She finds the titles and endings to be funny.

I like that the set has 4 different reading levels so that she can grow into them as her reading progresses. We are only on the first set which is perfect for a little one who is beginning to read. Each of the 20 books in this set includes some phonics and some sight words. She can’t decode all the words, but can use picture clues to figure them out.

The set was good value for the price and is perfect for a child learning to read.

The Geonic period from about the late sixth to mid-eleventh centuries is of crucial importance in the history of Judaism. The Geonim, for whom this era is named, were the heads of the ancient talmudic academies of Babylonia. They gained ascendancy over the older Palestinian center of Judaism and were recognized as the leading religious and spiritual authorities by most of the world’s Jewish population. The Geonim and their circles enshrined the Babylonian Talmud as the central canonical work of rabbinic literature and the leading guide to religious practice, and it was a predominantly Babylonian version of Judaism that was transplanted to newer centers of Judaism in North Africa and Europe. Robert Brody’s book—the first survey in English of the Geonic period in almost a century—focuses on the cultural milieu of the Geonim and on their intellectual and literary creativity.

Brody describes the cultural spheres in which the Geonim were active and the historical and cultural settings within which they functioned. He emphasizes the challenges presented by other Jewish institutions and individuals, ranging from those within the Babylonian Jewish setting—especially the political leadership represented by the Exilarch—to the competing Palestinian Jewish center and to sectarian movements and freethinkers who rejected rabbinic authority altogether. He also describes the variety of ways in which the development of Geonic tradition was affected by the surrounding non-Jewish cultures, both Muslim and Christian.

Required Textbook

This was a required textbook for my degree program in Culinary Arts. Generally, an O.K. book, but most chapters had too many "Key Words and Concepts" at the end to be of use (i.e. Chapter 23 - Meat was 31 pages and had 91 Key Words and Concepts). It would have been nice if there was a CD to accompany the book that provided practical exercises, sample forms, dictionary, etc...

Shea—who at age 20 was the drug boss for South Boston Irish mobster James "Whitey" Bulger and later served 12 years in federal prison for drug trafficking (yes, he was given the opportunity to rat, but, "like a man," he didn't)—gives gangster honor a bare-knuckled workout in his memoir, a slick read dripping with the underworld holy trinity of sex, drugs and violence. Born in 1965 into a "fucked up family" in South Boston, Shea traded a foundering boxing career for a gig making $4,000 a night selling cocaine and marijuana. Before long, Bulger took him under his wing and, being a tough and honorable guy, Shea ascended the ranks and had a crew working for him before he was busted and did his time. To hear Shea tell the story, he's about the only guy in South Boston who can keep his trap shut—including Bulger, who turned rat and is now in hiding—once the cuffs are on. And though his unrelenting swagger can wear thin and the writing has lackluster moments, Shea's story is a bawdy page-turner in the Iceman tradition that true crime fans will enjoy. 16 pages of b&w photos.(Mar.)

EASILY the worst of the whole Whitey/Southie genre

I am SO glad I read this via a library and didn't pay a cent for it! Johnny Shea is the ultimate example of the self-serving, ignorant Southie project product. Absolutely NO redeeming value to Shea or his fictions. An embarassing project, one which should never have been put to publication. In a world of insecure, self-important criminals attempting to cash in on their connections to Bulger, Shea stands apart as uniquely loathsome. A MUST not-read.

In The Southie/Irish Mob Genre, This Is Only Okay

If you're just getting into what has now become a genre of Irish/Southie/True Crime books, definitely start with the ones done by the writer/reporters, ie, Black Mass, Westies, and Paddy Whacked - books with multiple sources and footnotes and everything - instead of the biographies. I've now read all the Southie books except for Kevin Weeks', which I'm only kind of looking forward to after this one and Pat Nee's. This is the conclusion I have come to.

If you're just interested in this book, it is, essentially, one big self-inflicted ego stroke minus numerous details that would have added to the intrigue of the tale. There are almost no interesting, well-developed or enlightening stories aside from the tales of prison life.

The biggest thing I came away with from this book is that Shea feels the need to tell you how tough he is at least once in every single chapter. Frankly, it gets tiresome and takes away from the story. Shea turns from a would be protagonist (if you buy into the "admirable" qualities the main character portrays) into someone you hope will at least bring something redeeming to the table in the end. It doesn't happen.

This one had potential. Unfortunately, the egomania, the lack of details, and the lack of developed stories take away from the impact.
