I cannot follow his meanings as closely as I'd like. I suppose this is not a problem for ...

This long out of print history of Art Academies is finally available at a reasonable cost. I bought one right away. The quality of this reprinting is decent. Thank you to Cambridge University Press for making it available.

As to the text itself, there is one HUGE caveat.. that Pevsner's writing style uses A LOT of quoted passages in foreign languages, with NO TRANSLATION. The languages I have come across so far are Italian (a lot of these), Latin, German, and French. Sometimes he quotes entire paragraphs in a foreign language. Since I don't speak these language, I cannot follow his meanings as closely as I'd like. I suppose this is not a problem for Pevsners audience of academic art historians from the 1940s... whom I presume spoke many European languages... but if you (like me) do not.... you will find it strangely alienating. You are forced to just SKIP IT AND MOVE ON... LOL... it's kind-a weird.

But anyway... the book is excellent despite this.

About the Author
Dr. Alexander Lowen is the creator of bioenergetics, which he has defined as "a therapeutic technique to help a person get back together with his body and to help him enjoy to the fullest degree possible the life of the body." Incorporating direct work on the body into the psychoanalytic process, Dr. Lowen practices psychiatry in New York and Connecticut and is the executive director of the Institute of Bioenergetic Analysis. He is married and lives in New Canaan, Connecticut, with his wife and son.

In Making Sense of Depression, This Book is a Real Guide to Change

I am a counselor myself, trained in Family Therapy. This is not the first book of Lowen's that I had read, but when I read it, I realized that I must practice from Lowen's point of view. Most depressed people (and I have been one) are told that their depression is a mental mistake and that they need to 'think better' to feel better. But as Lowen shows, thinking is not the problem. Sure, cognitive distortions arise, but they are the mind's best effort to understand very painful feelings that are real and that also are reflected in the state of the body. When a therapist identifies cognitive distortions as the origin of the problem, the depressed person just starts hiding them, because the 'distortions' are compelling, because they do 'make sense' as far as sensation goes.

Lowen's bio-energetic therapy has benefitted me enormously. It is not for dabblers. Lowen's approach to feeling better makes cognitive and family therapy appear very superficial indeed. Lowen does indeed talk about trends in society, but they are very relevant to depression, because depression is not random, it is the consequence of a state of living which is starved for real pleasure and satisfaction. Both some social and some family trends foist a joyless state of living onto children that carried forward, leads to a major depression.

The fix is not an instant or quick one. It is however, a surprisingly commonsense one-- getting back to the wisdom of sensation and emotion (with body work), protecting one's integrity with legitimate anger, and respecting the role that simple pleasures and satisfactions play in health.

Surprisingly worthwhile read

I am a licensed counselor and have been reading professional literature since the late '70's, had run into Lowen here & there, but never paid him much attention, assuming he would be dry and theoretical. I just picked up Depression and the Body and found it quite helpful.
The bioenergetic theory and treatment remain to be proven. Lowen's explanations make sense on the surface, anyway. But his understanding of depression, while not groundbreaking, is clear, complete, compassionate and adaptable to the counseling situation. While he focuses on early childhood and its traumas (not usually fertile ground for therapy in the real world) he also provides some useful here-and-now insights about the thinking of a depressed person and how it needs to change in order for recovery to occur.
I didn't give the book five stars because some of the book digresses into material about social and cultural issues that have little to do with the problem of depression. But overall I would recommend this book for anyone wanting to read about depression from a HUMAN angle.

Great Value!

The first part of this Book/CD combo has five Hendrix tracks transcribed in complete detail. The lead parts have been available in various transcriptions, but what makes this book different is the complete transcriptions of the rhythm guitar parts as well as the lead. "Hey Joe",for example, has both of the rhythm guitar tracks transcribed. The same level of detail is apparent in the four other complete songs - "Purple Haze", "All Along the Watchtower", "Red House", and "The Wind Cries Mary". For me, it is this level of rhythm guitar detail that was the selling point.

The next section "Essential Licks" are quotes from various Hendrix songs, and contains 44 licks.

"Essential Riffs", the third part of the book, is an analysis of some of the guitar sections from "Little Wing", "Spanish Castle Magic", "Manic Depression", "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)", "Foxey Lady", "Machine Gun", "Who Knows", "Stone Free","Bold as Love", and "Fire".

The "Integral Techniques" section has fourteen examples which are not direct quotes. "Stylistic DNA" has nine licks that are similar to those Hendrix used - some of these are direct quotes from more Hendrix songs. The "Must Hear" section is a list of tracks from albums which the author considers essential - this is followed by a "Must See" section which lists DVDs and YouTube videos.

All of the examples/licks/songs are on the audio tracks available for download as mp3 files - nothing is missed.

Really good value, one of the best efforts by Andy Aledort, the author.

'scuse me while i look for the missing parts of the songs....

I have been a fan on Andy Aledort's Hendrix instruction books going back to his Hendrix "Signatue Licks" years ago. His production is always clean, and the guitar is bumped up enough so that you can hear the parts in the mix much better than the original recordings(of course there is no singing either). This is another high quality book, with access to online music references that can be slowed down, or change the pitch(don't feel like dropping to Eb? No problem!) If you don't have much of a music back ground, then some of the technical knowledge regarding scales might get confusing, but if you just practice the lesson, you will incorporate it into your own playing over time. And the book is packed with lessons, and th accompanying audio is great. So why 4 stars? Well, it says "5 Complete songs", and yet the 5 songs you are given have holes in them. No some of it my seem miniscule; the opening octave of purple haze for instance. It is in the tab, and it is in the "full version" of the song, but it is never included in any of the sections that break it down. No biggie right? OK....well, why is the first half of the SOLO not covered? Again, it is in the full version of the song, and you have the tab...but this is "The Ultimate Guitar Lesson" right? In his early Signature Licks CD, it is covered, I can't imagine why half of the solo was left out? This continues over the other 4 (ALMOST) complete songs. And if you are anything but the most novice guitarist, you should be able to use the tab and full track to get the rest....but you shouldn't have to. The would have been better to ditch a few "Essential riffs" and truly complete these songs. Or better yet, ditch the "essential riffs" all together, put the full song in, and put a few more songs. Jimi Hendrix has enough material that they could do easily do 2 volumes, if not 3. If you're a Hendrix fan looking to learn(or in my case, polish up) some Hendrix tunes, this is a great resource, but it is not "complete". Search for Andy Aledort and Hendrix, and you will several other books, CDs and DVDs he has done. I recommend them all.
