About the Author
Prof. S. K. Sinha earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur in 1993. He has 25 years of teaching experience, and has been working in the CNC area for over 15 years. Well-written and thorough

I have Peter Smid's CNC Programming Handbook (which I highly suggest). I almost bought Smid's Macro programming book before I saw this. This book is $20-30 cheaper than Smid's book, and I am quite impressed with it. The description's table of contents is accurate; it covers a lot of useful topics. The explanations of the basics of macro programming are very clear. As long as you have experience with general CNC programming, you can follow the explanations. It does help to have previous computer programming experience, though. There are multiple chapters dedicated to applications of macro programming with plenty of examples. There are also a lot of very good programming tips throughout the book that will save new programmers some hassle debugging programs.

The book focuses on Fanuc controls (the Fanuc 0i, in particular). However, the shop I work for uses Haas machines, and I have found that Haas's implementation of macros is quite standard. The mapping of system variables matches very closely to the book's description.

Excellent source of education on macros

There is absolutely no wasted space in the 200+ pages here. Covers mostly everything, and gives you an understanding of the macro concept well enough to continue developing your understanding on your own. Since reading I have devised 2 practical macro applications in the shop I work in. It is necessary to be familiar with the cnc process already and the codes that accompany the process, but once you are this book expands your knowledge well beyond that of your peers. Some subjects are rather complex that relate to more advanced features of macros (communicating with external devices, PLC's and the like) but that gives you an idea of where to go after mastering the macro language.

Great book

This covers a lot of introductory aspects of macro programming like construction, and how to layout code, and defines the characters and functions well as advanced stuff. I bought this book because I recently got a job that uses macros. the only thing I did not like about the book is the lack simplicity and understanding of some of the examples. I just found they didn't dumb it down enough for the new guys or i would have given 4 stars. i think it is a must have for reference with macro programming.

Very Thorough Guide to Calvin

2009 marks the 500th anniversary of the birth of John Calvin, Father of the Reformed Faith. This is a good year to reread the Institutes of the Christian Religion and to follow that up with this excellent book. Charles Partee, a professor of church history at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, is a superior Calvin scholar and one of this book's strengths is his familiarity with the work of other Calvin scholars. Partee is a great admirer of Calvin which comes through clearly in this work. The book deals with the difference between the authentic John Calvin and Calvinism. After an in-depth overview of Calvin's theology, we are led on a tour of the Institutes. I found this extremely helpful. It has been a while since I read the Institutes end to end, but reading Partee's tour of the Institues was a very helpful refresher. Any person serious about the reformed faith would do well to read this book. It is advanced scholarship demanding serious thought and reading. The extensive footnotes are informative and offer fascinating detours, amplifications and explanations. Professor Partee knows the work of other Calvin scholars and spends a great deal of time analyzing their thought. The conclusion of the book reminds us that we cannot expect Calvin to address some of the contemporary issues in the church and in theology and the relationship between church and state and the Bible and science. He handles this discussion well.

I am a Reformed Church in America pastor and found every minute spent in this book helpful to me. It was a great refresher in Calvin and evocative discussion of many issues in the reformed faith. Partee "gets it" that theology is at its best and most worthwhile when it serves the church. Partee's book certainly did that for me. Partee spent part of his career as a pastor of churches and seems not to have forgotten that.

I would not recommend this as a primer on Calvin. Again, one should become familiar with the Institutes first. An abridged version is fine. The reader would also benefit from reading an introduction to the reformed faith such as Donald McKim's introduction to the reformed faith and John Leith's introduction to the reformed tradition and an introduction to John Calvin such as "Calvin for Armchair Theologians" before tackling this book. This at a minimum. However, any theologically trained minister or lay person should be able to garner some wholesome grain from this superior book.

Too deep and too wide, but...

Had I read the incisive review that precedes this one, I might have left the book on the shelf at the store, because I was not prepared for either the depth of Partee's discussion nor the breadth of the sources he evaluates so confidently--and I have still done little more than browse "The Institutes." On the face of it, I am not qualified to write a review.
But I did take the book from the shelf, I did sample some paragraphs, and I found myself responding to the little I read. For example, "Calvin's enemies are profoundly wrong in their caricature of him. Additionally and sadly, but not surprisingly, Calvin's friends often believe he says what they want to hear... Put another way, a number of Calvin's presumptive family of friends are less faithful to his legacy than his declared enemies" (p 5). Does that not make one want to know more? It does, and I bought the book.
Partee assumes his readers are ready for him, and he doesn't cut them any slack. Consider the history incorporated into a single introductory sentence on page 120: "The debate [about the Trinity] led through the heresies of the Ebionites, the Gnostics, Origen, the Monarchians, the Adoptionists, Arius, Apollinaris, Nestorius, and Eutyches until the orthodox formula adopted at the Council of Nicaea (325), which was supplemented at the Council of Chalcedon (451)." On the other hand, his engaging prose stimulates and informs: "... but when freedom is mentioned, Calvin thinks passions boil and wild tumults arise" (p 232). The dry theology that Partee quotes contrasts sharply with the lively language he uses to analyze it. And does he quote! I didn't count them all, but there are 99 citations, many annotated, in the 30-page chapter at the end of the book, and that is typical.
I am not competent to tell you whom he has omitted, but his range is fascinating. On page 97 he mentions Freud, quotes Mr. Collins from "Pride and Prejudice", adds a laudatory footnote about Huck Finn, and tacks on a Mark Twain anecdote about a man who encountered his conscience "...appearing as a small fiend 'covered all over with a fuzzy, greenish mold...' ". He rounds off this list of eminent theologians by rejecting "...the teaching of the eminent ethicist, Jiminy Cricket" at the top of the next page.
Whenever the discussion became too deep and too wide for me, I had recourse to the footnotes, which slice through the academic details with conversational personal insights. My only quarrel with the previous reviewer is that he did not mention Partee's sense of humor, which pervades and enlivens his entire book.
In conclusion, "The Theology of John Calvin" is extremely well-written, and I accept without knowing, that the scholarship is as sound as the exposition.

Great set of tools and techniques for everyone

I am writing this review whilst lying on the coach having finished this book during a full day of heavy rain and no real ability to exercise. I am a little tired as it is 11:30pm, but feel motivated having finished this great book.

This is a great book to read for everyone who works in any organisation. The chapter on performance appraisals was one I immediately shared with my team.

What was most amazing was as soon as I shared it a member of the team sent an email response using the exact techniques of the chapter (I.e. setting context just as I did with this review).

I truly encourage everyone to read this book. Of course not all sections and concepts are for everyone, and that will be up to each of us to decide.

This book can turn around your company

This book is a collection of exercises which can be independently read and applied. I first came across some of it's pratices in a workshop with the author in 2014 and was excited about many of the ideas. After having returned to work, the first thing I did was to try and use a technique called "delegation boards" on some senior managers that hat spent days talking about who was suppsed to be responsible for what. This technique solved their issue in an hour.
Of course, this stunning success got me excited to try out more and so I got the book.
The different chapters are short and concise reads, visually appealing and always very well referenced - the latter unfortunately seems to be a rare virtue these days. Most importantly though, each chapter ends with a step-by-step description, making the synthesis for you so you can just try it out and see what happens. This makes application, usually one of the biggest challenges, incredibly easy.
What I personally really enjoy is, that it is a loosely coupled collection of techniques, not a "bible" or "dogma" that you need to follow like many other management books are. The author suggests ideas and how to implement them but leaves room for flexibility and adaption.
By now we have implemented some more techniques described in the book and will continue to try out.
Get this book if you want to equip your company with management ready for the 21st century, it is one of the very few management books in the past years I have bothered to read till the end.

It's not just a book with nice ideas, but there are also many hand-on examples. We started implementing several practices from the book with very good results.

My big question was "What should I do as a manager, while my teams practice SCRUM and are self-managing?"
And with the book(s) and workshops of Jurgen I got many good directions.

Vertosick's is not the usual how-I-got-through-my-residency-and-aren't-I-smart? account. Rather, Vertosick shows how a steelworker--himself--successfully became a neurosurgeon. He includes the events that shaped his feelings and emotions and his growing knowledge of himself, his patients, and his colleagues, and the fact that some of those incidents seem outwardly minor indicates that Vertosick is a perceptive individual capable of seeing the humanity of both his patients and himself. So his account of his three months in London emphasizes his ability to recognize that there are more aspects to his specialty than just the high-tech ones. And what does such a specialist typically do? Vertosick points out that two-thirds of neurosurgical operations are for the alleviation or control of pain. The neurosurgeon must always assume pain is organic, although this neurosurgeon neatly draws the distinctions between pain and suffering. An engaging and refreshing book. William Beatty

At times it's sad. At other times it's unsettling

At times it's sad. At other times it's unsettling. Parts even make you laugh. It's as much a journey into the humanity of the world of neurosurgery, and the path to becoming a neurosurgeon, as it is a foray into the raw experience of the operating room. The fragile tissue that houses the self is exposed at the risk of irreversible, terminal consequences, a risk that's overshadowed enough by the alternative to make it worthwhile. Well written. Gripping.

Tales from Neurosurgery

I took a break from my quest to re-read my library of books with an eye towards reviewing them on my blog, Amazon.com and Goodreads to venture into the realm of a new book. I chose When the Air Hits Your Brain: Tales from Neurosurgery not from any specific recommendation but because of the reviews on Amazon.com. I normally don’t do this but I figured it was worth a shot.

And I’m glad I did.

Dr. Vertosick is a great author (or he has a damned good editor; either one will do) and has a very inviting style of writing about very complex subjects. He doesn’t go into great medical details, instead, he gives you enough to understand the problem the goes into what was done and how he felt about it.

I especially enjoyed his time in England and really appreciated the differences between the two views of medicine. I had to laugh when one of the senior doctors talked in disparaging ethnic terms about a patient, something Dr. Vertosick said wouldn’t fly in America. I appreciated his comment because I found that some of the European sports commentators would say things that would have gotten them yanked off the air in the US.

I found myself reading his chapter on his pediatric patient Rebecca twice because it touched my heart. His other patients were equally fascinating including the Viet Nam vet with the blown aneurism.

This is a highly recommended book. It’s an easy read (as compared to the previously reviewed book When Illness Strikes the Leader: The Dilemma of the Captive King by Professor Robert S. Robins and Dr. Jerrold Post M.D. written more for the academics in us) and a compelling read. I found it hard to turn away when lunch time was over.

I read the electronic version mostly on my iPad mini and my iPhone. I’m assuming that W. W. Norton did the electronic version, which I found (as opposed to Treating the Brain: What the Best Doctors Know) to be fairly decent though I really hated the fact that it was justified text and wished publishers would not do this – it makes reading difficult and hyphenation impossible. I did find a few mistakes such as run on words, but nothing was a show stopper such as with the aforementioned book.

I’d recommend this book to anyone who is interested in first-person accounts of “How I became a Doctor,” those interested in surgeons and surgery, brain surgery and some neurology thrown in for good measure. I give this book 4.5 stars – a good solid read for those of us who enjoy this kind of tome.

My next foray is back to my library and hardcover books is A Brief History of Disease, Science and Medicine by Michael T. Kennedy. I really enjoyed it the first time and am curious as to how it stands up to time and a second read.

An engaging but disturbingly inaccurate read

I bought this book to preview as a recommended reading for my premedical seminar students and as a source of ideas for clinical case studies that I write for a medical physiology course. I found it a very engaging read, hard to put down. Vertosick has an admirable flair for medical writing for a lay audience, and the book bears abundant fruit as a source of case studies to be read for general interest or to be fleshed out with thought questions for students. I will certainly recommend it to my students. For my premeds, it is a good companion to Ellen Rothman's "White Coat," which chronicles her four years of medical college, and Michael Collins's "Hot Lights, Cold Steel" on his four-year orthopedic surgery residency. Any high-school or college premedical student in need of a clearer vision of the path from there to independent-practice physician or surgeon would do well to read Rothman followed by Collins and/or Vertosick.

That said, I recommend it only with a caveat emptor, for I am astonished at Vertosick's egregious errors of human anatomy and evolutionary reasoning. He writes (p. 185) of surgery for a pituitary tumor, "The pituitary, an embryonic relic of the nasal passages, lies buried in the hard palate, just above the uvula." That's three major anatomical errors in one sentence! (1) The pituitary is in no way a relic of or derived from the nasal passages. About 2/3 of it arises in the embryo as an upward growth from the throat (pharynx) and 1/3 as a downgrowth from the floor of the brain. (2) The hard palate is not above the uvula, which is part of the SOFT palate posterior to the hard palate. (3) The pituitary is not even remotely embedded in the hard palate. The hard palate forms the FLOOR of the nasal cavity, and to get to the pituitary a surgeon has to go through the ROOF of the nasal cavity, then through an air space called the sphenoid sinus, and finally to the pituitary in a bony pit at the base of the brain. Another person with whom I shared this quote said he wouldn't want someone like Vertosick doing a vasectomy on him, because he would probably approach it through the navel! I would not accept Vertosick's version of perinasal anatomy even from a sophomore prenursing anatomy & physiology student.

Vertosick's evolutionary conjecture about the cancer (pp. 234-237) ("Cancer evolved for precisely this reason--to destroy the host.") is ludicrous on so many levels it would require a longer essay than a book review to explain it. Cancer cannot be explained as a natural, evolved mechanism for population control. Vertosick's thinking rests on completely fallacious reasoning about natural selection, with some resemblance to an old discredited "group selection" theory that evolutionary scientists dismissed many decades ago.

Yet another (p. 261): "Meningiomas...arise from the outer surface of the skull." Nonsense! A meningioma (tumor of the meninges) occurs in the membranes that lie between the brain and the skull, not between the skull and scalp on the outer surface of the skull.
