In this wonderfully unusual work Kate Greenaway provides an enchantingly illustrated glossary of the language of flowers. A fascinating insight into a bygone era, when the gift of a Tamsy was a declaration of war, and a Garden Daisy meant 'I share your sentiments'. Eighty two beautifully illustrated colour pages. Kate Greenwaway (1846-1901) is one of the most popular children's book illustrators of all time. Edmund Evans produced her first book in 1879, which sold out resulting in triumph and gaining Greenaway her reputation. About the Author
Kate Greenaway (1846 1901) British author and artist Kate Greenaway grew up in North London and spent summers in the Nottinghamshire countryside. These happy times from her childhood were the foundation of many of her stories. Her illustrations portraying the idyllic landscape as a playground for children dressed in sumptuous Regency clothing offered a romanticized escape from the realities of the ever-encroaching industrialized world. In her costume designs, she combined the influences of her mother, an accomplished seamstress, with those of her father, a master engraver. She studied art in London where she developed a close relationship with printer Edmund Evans (1826 1905). Together they produced more than 150 books. Greenaway s popular illustrations inspired lines of ceramics, jewelry, fabrics, wallpaper, and children s clothing.

Fun to read.
By A Customer
This is a fun book to read if you like symbolism, and even if you don't, it's fun to read the poems in the back. In this, almost every flower, clover and herb has a meaning and just about any flower you can you'll find in here. The illustrations are sweet, and this is a great reference if you're looking for something sentimental to give a friend.

Worst Book Ever
By Bran Englander
This is a review of the paperback version.
The book presented in the LOOK INSIDE! preview of the book, IS NOT THE SAME EDITION AS THE ONE YOU WILL GET IF YOU BUY THIS TRASH.
There are no pictures. Instead of a picture, you get a line of text that says "Image of flower", or "Image not available".
There is no formatting to the text, not so much as an indentation.
It's criminal.
If Amazon knew how bad this version of her great work actually is, they would never be selling it.
This is the worst piece of trash I ever bought on Amazon. Avoid at all costs.

Favorite Flower Reference
By Dew
Greenaway was famous for her fanciful, humorous, delicately colored drawings of child life. This little book was originally written in 1885, and it lists over 200 plants and their meaning in alphabetical order with 85 illustrations as well as some poems in the back of the book.

The only problem I have with this book is that the printing is very small.

She was born to die...again and again.

For Rhia was bound to the Spirit of Crow, gifted with the foresight of Death's approach and doomed to the isolation of one feared and set apart. There must always be one whose magic can ease the passage of the people of Asermos to the Other Side. But to be the guide her people require, to truly know the depth of her gift--her curse--Rhia must surrender herself to the wisdom of the Great Forest...and drink deeply of Death itself.

And though two powerful men stand ready to aid her, even to love her, the Aspect of Crow demands unthinkable sacrifices from the one who walks its path.

About the Author
Jeri Smith-Ready has been writing fiction since the night she had her first double espresso. A steady stream of caffeine has resulted in twelve published novels for teens and adults, including RT Reviewers Choice-winning fantasy EYES OF CROW; as well as the PRISM award-winning WICKED GAME and SHADE. Her most recent release is the YA contemporary novel THIS SIDE OF SALVATION, which Booklist called a "smart, unpredictable, and well-rounded tale" in its starred review.

Jeri lives in the rolling hills of Maryland with her husband and two cats, who often play tag-team "sit in the author's lap and keep her from writing." (The cats, that is, not the husband. Though actually...) When not writing, she's either out running or on Twitter.

The dog would not die.

Surely he was ill, and had been a puppy before the dawn of Rhia's earliest memory, more than five winters ago. He lay before the fire with his thick gray head in her lap, staring dully into the flames. She stroked the wiry hair along his side. His flesh felt cold, and she could fit her fingers between the ridges his ribs made in his skin. Even his halting breath smelled stale, like a half-open grave.

All her senses told Rhia that Boreas would not see tomorrow's sun. And yet...

Her mother Mayra turned from the table and crossed the room, feet whispering over the wolfskin rug. Holding an earthen bowl and a pale green cloth, she knelt beside Rhia.

"This will take away his pain and help him on his journey home." She showed Rhia the bowl's contents—a tiny amount of liquid, no more than what the child could cup in her palm. It wasn't enough.

Mayra covered the bowl with the cloth and began to chant, low and soft, calling upon her Otter Guardian Spirit to augment the medicine. Rhia closed her eyes and tried to clear her mind of fear and grief. The Spirits worked best when those present stayed out of their way.

Through her eyelids Rhia saw a golden light flare, the color of the sun on an autumn afternoon. A swish of liquid and Mayra's whispered gratitude told her that Otter had hearkened to the plea for help. When the light faded, Rhia opened her eyes and locked her gaze onto the dog's. Two tears, then another, plopped onto his muzzle.

Mayra dipped the cloth in the half-full bowl to let it soak. They sat listening to the only two sounds in the room—the dog's labored puffing and the snapping of sparks in the stone fireplace.

Rhia heard the cloth drip into the bowl as her mother squeezed it. The drops must not be wasted, but enough medicine needed to reach the dog's throat to give him release. Even in his withered old age, Boreas was much larger than Rhia—on his hind legs he could rest his paws on her head. A year ago, while Rhia was recovering from a muscle-wasting illness that sapped all strength from her limbs, Boreas had lent her his sturdy back and legs as a crutch. Now on cold nights like this one, when the wind and the wolves howled in harmony outside these log walls, she would curl up within his furry frame, one forepaw over her shoulder, and sleep warm and safe.

"Hold his head, dear."

Rhia reached under Boreas's snout and tilted it up. All at once he exhaled hard, almost a cough, and a weight lifted from him. In the back of her head she heard a sound like the hurried flapping of heavy wings. Her breath caught, and she craned her neck to peer behind her.

"What is it?" her mother asked.

Rhia turned to the worn face reddened by the wind and the firelight.

"It's not time," she said.

"Time for what?"

"For him to go."

Mayra cast a tender glance over her daughter's face. "I know you wish it were not his time, but—"

"He's not ready." She swallowed a sob and steadied her voice. "The world's not ready."

Mayra's gentle eyes narrowed. "Why do you speak of this?" Rhia tilted her head to the northwest, from where the wind blew. "He'll take a wolf with him when he goes."

Her mother's whisper shook. "How do you know?"

"I just know." She blinked, and her last tear fell, this time on her own wrist. To stop now would be to waste her mother's magic—magic she herself hoped to carry one day. But something not entirely inside her begged for the dog's life. "Please don't make him die, Mama. Wait until morning, and you'll see. I promise."

Mayra's eyes glistened in the firelight as she gazed at Rhia with something more complicated than sympathy. The look held more pain than her mother's face had shown since Rhia's sickness—which, the girl now realized, was the first time she had heard those wings rush over the landscape of her mind.

Finally Mayra reached out and retucked one of her daughter's red-brown curls behind her ear, then brushed the back of her hand against Rhia's cheek. Without a word she stood and placed the cloth and bowl on the table, then shuffled over to climb the ladder to the sleeping loft she shared with her husband, Tereus.

Rhia dragged a thick log across the hearth and heaved it into the flames. It spit and hissed like a cornered wildcat. She blinked at it with near-pleasure as she remembered how even a few months ago she could no more have lifted the log than raise the house itself. Though her limbs would never regain normal strength, they no longer betrayed her, no longer pretended not to hear what her mind ordered them to do. They obeyed grudgingly, with the reluctance of sullen children.

She turned away from the fire and lay on the floor behind Boreas, her front to his back. Reaching around him, she pulled the wolf skin rug over both their bodies. The hound groaned deep in his throat.

"Go to sleep," she murmured into the knobby ridge on the back of his head. "You'll wake tomorrow."

The dog would not die, not for another two and a half years, when Rhia was nearly eleven. A wolf pack tried to drive the ponies from her family's farm into the surrounding forest. Though far into old age, Boreas was the first of the dogs to attack, killing the lead wolf. Moments later, his body crumpled from the effort. Because the summer soil was too dry and hard to dig a grave, Rhia and her family made a cairn of rocks for the dog and wolf together, then said a prayer to Crow to guide them safely home.

A rumor of Rhia's vision must have escaped, for the villagers began to invite the girl to observe their sick hounds or lame ponies. She wanted to help, but the animals' suffering saddened her, and their journeys toward the Other Side reminded her of the one she had almost taken as a child.

The bitterest blow came when Mayra, a village healer, no longer brought her along to patients' homes. During Rhia's childhood, they had both hoped that the sweet, playful Otter would touch her, too. A different Spirit had chosen her—one that courted not life but its dreaded opposite.

One day, after Rhia had just turned fifteen, Galen the village Council leader came to her family's horse and dog farm with his son Arcas. It was a brisk late afternoon in early spring, when the leaf buds were still only in the trees' imagination. Rhia was cleaning the hounds' pens when she saw the man and boy trudge up the steep hill to her home. She hurried to smooth her long hair and wipe the sweat from below her eyes. Mustn't look slovenly for Galen, she told herself, then smiled at her feeble attempt at self-deception. It was the sight of Arcas, not his imposing father, that made her pulse jump and her hands twitch and wonder what to do with themselves.

She couldn't put a pin in the moment when she first saw Arcas as something other than a childhood playmate. Most likely it happened either an instant before or an instant after he had kissed her behind the stables the month before. Since then, the smell of manure made her swoon with joy.

Rhia trotted toward the house to call her parents, then stopped to regard the two men again, for something was different about them today. Their steps were heavy, tan faces set in unusual grimness, heads bowed so that the sunlight glinted off their hair, the color of freshly tilled soil. Arcas's hair fell halfway down his back, but Galen's swept the top of his shoulders; it had been cut short last year to mourn the death of his mother.

As always, a single brown hawk feather, black-streaked and red-tipped, hung around Galen's neck. Everyone she knew who possessed animal magic—which was every adult she'd ever met—wore some fetish of their Guardian Spirit to signal their powers. It was not to boast but rather a courtesy to let others know what they were dealing with. For instance, no one could be tricked into trying to deceive Owl people, who saw through a lie as if it were made of air.

When they were about ten steps away, Galen's sharp gaze finally found Rhia. Something in it made her want to draw a thick cloak around herself, both for warmth and concealment. She sensed he knew more about her than she cared to confront on this til-now-tranquil day.

Rhia greeted them with a bow, which they returned. "Welcome," she said, then looked at Galen. "How is your brother's health?"

"Not good, Rhia. Thank you for asking." He managed a slight smile, tempering her unease. "May I speak with your parents?"

She nodded and reached for the front door, which opened before she touched it.

"Galen, greetings." Her father was dressed for company, in clean shoes and a russet shirt that matched his hair, which looked freshly combed and plaited into a long braid down his back. A single white Swan feather, dust-fringed from long days on the farm, swung from a leather cord around his neck as he bowed. "We've been expecting you."

Mayra appeared at Tereus's side and took his arm. Her thin lips trembled as she glanced between Rhia and the Council leader. "Please, come in."

Galen crossed the threshold, turned and held out his palm in an unambiguous gesture that told Rhia and Arcas, "stay outside."

The door closed, and Rhia turned to her friend. "Why didn't they tell me you and your father were coming?" They could have at least given her the chance to wash her face and comb the hay out of her hair. But she realized now that all day Mayra and Tereus had behaved as if they were both monitoring and avoiding her. "And why can't we hear?"

Arcas hunched his shoulders. "My uncle's very sick. Father probably wants some of your mother's healing wisdom."

"But he didn't ask for my mother. He asked for my parents. Don't you think that's mysterious?"

A slow smile spread across Arcas's face. "When you've lived with my father for sixteen years, you get used to mysteries."

She turned away at the sight of his grin, which warmed her toes. "I have to water the dogs."

Arcas followed her into the hounds' pen. The tall gray beasts swarmed him as if he were dinner itself. He patted his broad chest with both hands, and two of the dogs propped their paws against him and licked his face. Rhia noticed that for the first time, he was taller than they were.

"It's hard on their backs to stand like that." She picked up the two dirty pails of water. "Sorry. Off!" he told the hounds in a tone too playful for them to heed.

They left the pen and headed for Mayra's herb garden, where Rhia splashed the leftover water from the pails.

"Besides," Arcas said, "I shouldn't teach your dogs bad manners. If they ever jumped on you that way, your little bones would be crushed to a fine powder."

Rhia tried to glare at him, though she preferred being taunted rather than pitied for her lack of physical prowess. Arcas was one of the few people who didn't treat her like she was made of eggshells.

"For that remark, you get to pump." She tossed him one of the buckets.

"You're a big girl now, you can do it."

"I can, but I'd rather watch you." Arcas actually blushed as he knelt beside the well pump next to the garden. The lever squeaked in protest when he lifted it.

"Before you know it," he said in a teasing voice, turning the attention back on her, "you'll head into the forest for your Bestowing."

She suppressed a shudder at the thought of entering the dark woods. "I'm too busy. If my Guardian Spirit wants to bestow my Aspect, It can bring it here."

"Spirits don't grant powers to those who hide from them." He pumped water into the bucket with a slow, steady rhythm. "Except maybe for Mouse."

"I'm not a Mouse!" Rhia almost slung the other pail at Arcas's head.

He raised a defensive arm in front of his face and laughed, but then his voice sobered. "Everyone knows what you are."

Incredible and Awe Inspirng
By AlyssGrey
This book is magic from beginning to end, and reads soomthly but with with great truth found in its core.
Reading this book you would never guess this book belongs in th scifi genre (to understand that part read the prequel Call Of The Wild which is available free from amazon), but the basic idea of the book is that it takes place hundreds of years in the future after the demise of Earth as we know it. What is created is a civilization created by people who never knew each other who become chosen hosts for animal spirits who help them build a world again.
This book is almost Native American in the idea that each person has a spirt animal aspect which gives them powers and abilities to run the community. The who idea is everyone works for the common good.
This book (and series after prequel) tell the story of Rhia who discovers after a devastating childhood illness that her spirit animal is unusal crow. A person inbewed with the power or crow means that they take a person's soul into the after life, the can tell how close a person is to death by the sound of crows wings, and after mastering certain levels even talk to the dead. This book is about how Rhia comes to terms with being a crow and learning how to do the tasks she must do. And most importantly how to find love and feel love as well as passion when you hold the knowledge of their very death and know its you who will bring them to the afterlife.
It isn't your average scifi novel but it does rank as one of the best books I have ever written. It's not a post apocalyptic novel because it's about a people who have found a way to life, like going back to the days of the traditional Native American People, it's not a book with flashy swords or lighsabers, no this book is a story of human survival which has gone back to the roots of the world and in the process tells a coming of age story of girl who not only has to learn to live and manage and help with a power so many see as scary and horrifying and all the while find love.
This book takes done all you barriers and really makes you question your views on death and the power it has on you and our society and brings into the perspective the power of relationships and all that one must consider within the.not just how long will they last, but the passion and love and care that must be there, and also the impact of death on a relationship, and even deeper perhaps the effects of hiding your true self.
This book should not be missed. It should be one taken in and shared.

Postmodern world
By Lexxie
Oh, how I loved this world, where people were in contact with the spirit world, and each person had an animal spirit to guide them, and to help others.

Rhia is truly an extraordinary young woman! She was afraid of her gift, and had to deal with the guilt that came because of it. However, when she finally chose to embrace it, she showed both strength and weakness, confidence and insecurity. And she continued to be true to herself as she grew.

I loved how she was with Arcas, but was even happier with how she developed and became more mature, and loving with Marek.

Her relationships with others were like they are for actual people as well, sometimes, we are scared when we meet new people, and JSR really coined that awkwardness that can arise when we move to a new place.

The war scenes were truly amazing, I felt like I was running around with Rhia when the fighting was at its' peak, and I was searching for Marek with her.

The Journey begins...
By Amy C
Wow! Fantastic book. The idea of death can be terrifying because it is an uknown to us. But with the help of Crow and the one bestowed with His aspect, he helps to soothe that which we don't know, easing their transition to the Other side.
Rhia was chosen to have the aspect of Crow. In this first book we journey with her as she discovers she cannot run from her destiny, no matter how much she fears being Crow. With a war looming, an invasion of the Descendants (those who do not believe in the magic of the Spirits), Rhia has completed her Bestowing and trains with another Crow woman from Kalindos. There Rhia meets Marek. Their relationship is strong and together he helps her with her fear and she helps with his guilt. I thought this book was very intriguing. The detail of the world and the Spirits was well thought out and wonderfully put together. There were some tearful moments and those are always a plus for me. Definitely a great fantasy and a recommended read!

Everything the amateur pipe organ builder should know.
By A Customer
Although this book does not cover the organ revival of the 50's and 60's, it has much to offer the amateur organ builder. From simple ancient organ designs to the more famous organs such as the one at St. Bavos this book will cover much of it. The few things this book does not cover to a great extent is the voicing process, and recent technology (post 20's) but it offers enough to educate the already knowledgeable amateur, but not reccomended for someone that doesn't know a little about pipe organs.

This has been the "Bible" of Organ Building for more than 100 years. It's great to see that it is now available in this format, because it is still one of the best reference books on the subject.

The New Codependency: Help and Guidance for Today's Generation (Thorndike Health, Home & Learning), by Melody Beattie

In Codependent No More, Melody Beattie introduced the world to the term codependency. Now a modern classic, this book established Beattie as a pioneer in self-help literature and endeared her to millions of people who longed for healthier relationships. Twenty-five years later, concepts such as "self-care" and "setting boundaries" have become entrenched in mainstream culture. Now Beattie has written a follow-up volume, The New Codependency, which clears up misconceptions about codependency, identifies how codependent behavior has changed, and provides a new generation with a road map to wellness. The question remains: What is and what isn't codependency? Beattie here reminds us that much of codependency is normal behavior. It's about crossing lines. There are times we do too much, care too much, feel too little, or overly engage. Feeling resentment after giving is not the same as heartfelt generosity. Narcissism and self-love, enabling and nurturing, and controlling and setting boundaries are not interchangeable terms. In The New Codependency, Beattie explores these differences, effectively invoking her own inspiring story and those of others, to empower us to step out of the victim role forever. Codependency, she shows, is not an illness but rather a series of behaviors that once broken down and analyzed can be successfully combated. Each section offers an overview of and a series of activities pertaining to a particular behavior-caretaking, controlling, manipulation, denial, repression, etc.-enabling us to personalize our own step-by-step guide to wellness. These sections, in conjunction with a series of tests allowing us to assess the level of our codependent behavior, demonstrate that while it may not seem possible now, we have the power to take care of ourselves, no matter what we are experiencing. Punctuated with Beattie's renowned candor and intuitive wisdom, The New Codependency is an owner's manual to learning to be who we are and gives us the tools necessary to reclaim our lives by renouncing unhealthy practices.

Review
[Audio Review] Lorna Raver's rich vocal personality captures the author's candor and wisdom in this follow-up volume to the classic CODEPENDENT NO MORE. Beattie describes current misconceptions of codependency, then makes observations on how the abuse of multiple substances has changed codependent tendencies. She explores how recovery from addictive behaviors and codependency is about personal responsibility, not blame. Raver delivers the author s simple examples of the difference between controlling behavior and normal behavior, as well as her reminder that behavioral change is often uncomfortable. The author calls this book an "owner's manual" that provides a "roadmap to wellness" that will help listeners turn behavioral deficits into assets. Overall, Raver delivers the author s encouraging remarks with warmth and clarity. Pen and notebook are suggested for quizzes and questionnaires. G.D.W. © AudioFile 2009, Portland, Maine --AudioFile

SECTION ONE

Crossing Lines and Getting Back over Them Again

1 • Taking Care of Ourselves

I know what it's like to lose yourself so badly that you don't know if there's a you or ever was one. I spent thirty years not knowing what boundaries were and another ten learning to set them. I gave until I was depleted and needed someone to take care of me. I threatened, begged, hinted, and manipulated to get what I wanted. I was convinced that I knew what was best for other people. I got so busy teaching them their lessons that I forgot to learn mine.

Within minutes of meeting a man, I was sure I'd met my soul mate. A few hours later, I'd fantasize about the wedding. That's how it happened on television. Isn't that how it happened in life? I'd spend two years trying to get into a relationship, and the next five trapped, clawing my way out. I obsessed until my head ached. Literally, it hurt. I didn't know what feelings were. Whenever I said I felt something, people said, "Don't feel that!"

Like millions of other women and men, I was victimized as a child. Instead of holding the perpetrators responsible, I blamed myself. There's something wrong with me, I thought. I didn't see the bad things that happened to me happening to anyone else. Feeling like we caused the problem is a legitimate stage of grief. Feeling ashamed is normal when we've been abused. Blaming ourselves is a survival skill. It helps us feel in control when life doesn't make sense and being abused doesn't make any sense at all.

Besides, aren't women supposed to suffer? We sacrifice ourselves. I became a martyr. I thought taking care of other people was my job. If I took care of them, I hoped they'd return the favor and take care of me. But that didn't happen. People expected me to take care of them once I started that pattern. There were many reasons I didn't take care of myself. The word no wasn't in my vocabulary. Good people were selfless. Loving myself was out of the question. Selfish! But the biggest reason I didn't take care of myself is that I didn't know how to.

Many of us didn't (or don't) know about self-care. It wasn't written about in books or talked about in school. We get user manuals for simple products, but we don't get a handbook for life. We stumble through complex situations, figuring things out for ourselves. Controlling and taking care of others -- the entire package of codependent behaviors -- become survival tools, living skills that we think will keep us safe. Then one day these behaviors turn on us. Our relationships and lives stop working and we don't know why. By then these survival behaviors are habits. They're all we know how to do.

If I had the years back I spent worrying about how the things I couldn't control were going to turn out, I'd have a third of my life to live over. That would be a life in which I wouldn't feel responsible for everyone or feel guilty all the time. I wouldn't waste energy controlling, enabling, and obsessively rescuing people -- the "helpful" things codependents do that don't really help. I'd let people take care of their responsibilities and I'd take care of mine. I wouldn't let people hurt me. I'd set boundaries -- say no. I wouldn't do only what other people wanted me to do; I'd do what I wanted, too. This time my giving would come from my heart, and my helping would actually help. I wouldn't judge everything that happened as wrong, including what I did, said, thought, and felt. I'd let life unfold, people be who they are, and I'd let myself be me. This time, I'd have the courage to experience true love.

I'd trust my intuition. If something didn't feel right, I'd know it probably wasn't. If I felt sad, I'd cry. If I felt angry, I'd feel that. I wouldn't ignore emotions until I imploded in illness or exploded in rage. I'd get out of my head and into my heart. I'd deal with my and others' feelings without all the drama; as much as possible I'd handle uncomfortable situations with diplomacy and tact. I wouldn't feel obligated and trapped. I'd know I had choices -- whether that means choosing attitude, gratitude, meditation, or prayer. Instead of protecting myself with fierce independence, I'd ask for help. I wouldn't be controlled by people and external events. My control center would be where it belongs -- in me. I wouldn't let other people's approval determine whether or not I approved of myself. I'd be energized by nature, God, and Life. I wouldn't drain other people, and I wouldn't let them drain me so much that my battery would die.

My relationships would be equal ones. I'd share power instead of one of us controlling and the other being controlled. I wouldn't have to create chaos to feel alive; I'd know I'm real. As one friend reminds me, instead of running headfirst into trouble, I'd go around it whenever I could (without resorting to denial). I know the value of peace. I'd create beauty, be of service, and have fun. I'd live and love at the same time. I'd admit my mistakes. But I'd also appreciate what I did well and let myself enjoy success.

This time I'd know what it means to love and take care of myself.

2 • How to Use This Handbook

To prepare for writing this handbook, I reread books I wrote years ago: Codependent No More (1985-86), Beyond Codependency (1988-89), The Language of Letting Go (1990), and The Codependents' Guide to the Twelve Steps (1990). I was surprised by how much I have changed. I barely recognized who I am now compared to who I was back then.

When I first wrote about codependency, I couldn't get theword past my computer's spell-checker. Most of the world didn't recognize the word yet either. For a book originally rejected by twenty publishers ("Nice idea," they said, "but there aren't enough codependents to make publishing the manuscript worthwhile"), Codependent No More -- strictly by word of mouth -- became a best-seller. It hit the lists and is still a backlist best-seller. My Beverly Hills internist read it as part of his medical training. It's part of many school and college curriculums. Therapists recommend it to patients. Thousands of people give it to family and friends. It's read in treatment centers, recovery groups, and by people around the world searching for how to make the pain from self-neglect stop. The subject of codependency and how to recover from it struck a universal nerve.

Naming that pain was like discovering fire -- a fire that people still discover each month as thousands begin the journey we started back then.

"We're part of a groundswell movement that's come into its own time," I wrote in Beyond Codependency. "Media and public attention may subside. But recovery from codependency is more than a fad. We started the journey of self-care and self-love. We're not stopping now."

Those words were prophetic. Concepts such as letting go, detachment, setting boundaries, and self-care mainstreamed. They worked their way into the culture. Ideas previously unknown or talked about only by small groups of recovering people are now discussed almost anywhere, from coffee shops to TV. Ideas that originated with the codependency recovery movement are now how millions of people -- whether or not they're in recovery -- live.

Four of the fourteen books I've written are devoted to codependency I didn't think I'd ever say this, but those four aren't enough. I'm writing this book to clarify confusion, discuss new information, write about how codependency has mutated, address new support options, and remind us about what we learned.

Although I've changed significantly since writing Codependent No More, I still step in codependent puddles. I might get hooked into someone's stuff, let their problems control me, over-engage, or start reacting instead of taking right action. I'll let family conditioning affect me, neglect to set boundaries, or shut down emotionally. There are times I have to slam on the brakes, STOP, and remember to take care of myself. I don't sink in quicksand like I used to, but sometimes I revert to survival mode. That's yesterday's news.

I don't call that relapsing. Caring about people we love, feeling victimized when we're betrayed, giving our all to people we love, or wanting to control people because we're watching them destroy themselves and hurt us doesn't mean we're sick. These are natural reactions. Codependency is about normal behaviors taken too far. It's about crossing lines.

This book is written for beginners and those further down the taking-care-of-themselves road. It offers practical help for people recovering from chemical dependency when they bottom out from codependency, usually after being sober anywhere from seven to ten years. The seven-year mark for recovering alcoholics and addicts is a widely accepted but unofficial recovery rule of thumb. After people stop drinking, they discover there are many things other than alcohol and drugs that they can't control, a rite of passage that could be dubbed "the Second Great Surrender." We let go of all illusions of control.

I also wrote this book for people who want to learn more about behaviors such as setting boundaries or dealing with feelings, but who don't want or need to go to treatment, therapy, or attend recovery groups. You don't have to label yourself codependent and embark on a grand transformation to benefit from this book. Instead you can learn about specific behaviors that will help you take better care of yourself. This book complements my other writing, but the material in here is fresh. This is an upgrade, building on and enhancing the work I did before, like when Windows evolved from DOS. This book can be used with my other books or by itself.

The material is divided into sections, the sections into chunks. It's structured like a shopping mall directory. Locate the spot that says YOU ARE HERE and you'll see how to get where you're going next. Section Two -- Breaking Free from the Control Trap and Getting Some Grace -- offers alternatives to codependent behaviors. Secti...

Great addition to the topic
By Holly
"The New Codependency" is the newest addition to the volume of work published by Melody Beattie. She was one of the first to identify codependency as a problem and provide information on the subject to a large audience of readers. The first book she wrote, "Codependent No More", was originally published in 1987. This book does not replace that one, it just expands on the topic and adds additional insight to the problem of codependency.

If you are new to the subject and just getting familiar with it, I would definitely recommend you start with "Codependent No More". After you are further along in your journey, this book makes a lot of sense but I don't think it is the right place to start. It really builds upon the concepts presented in the first book and there is a subtlety to it that is best appreciated after having done some work in this area already.

As in all her books, I need to sit with a highlighter and use it freely. I also dog ear pages as I go for quick reference back when I need to review. I read it straight through and then went back and took some of the quizzes offered which was really helpful. After reading it once, it is definitely not going back on the book shelf. There are a lot of activities outlined to do to help the reader address and access issues he/she is dealing with. It is almost as if there is a workbook contained within its pages. I will continue to use it as a reference/workbook for many months to come, I am sure.

Anyone who has identified themselves as a codependent (or is dealing with a codependent) will benefit greatly from this book. She conveys her message is a loving, caring way versus a list of "shoulds" which is exactly what a codependent needs. A couple of my favorite passages:

"We're giving to get. We give to get people to need us because we don't feel loveable. Caretaking attaches people to us, creating dependent relationships."

"Another communication problem is draining energy or power from someone under the guise of "talking." People may act like they want to have a conversation with us, but many people with codependency issues use conversation as a way to get us to take care of them."

The two books truly are the gold standard on this topic.

A helpful update of ideas
By PJ
Presents a needed update on thinking regarding codependency. This book addressed many of the problems I've had with the concepts of "codependency" over the years. Activities and quizzes give reader a way to put ideas into action in their lives. Probably not for someone new to Melody Beattie's work or learning about codependency in general - start at the beginning with Codependent No More or the daily readers. A strong addition to Melody's library.

A new take on helpful ideas
By Lauren Bastaparis
I have always been a fan of Melody Beattie's work, and I have benefited enormously from it since the old days of Codependent No More. I have not been in a relationship with someone addicted, but I nevertheless recognized myself in the description of the Codependent. There were so many similarities: not being able to take care of myself, obsessing about other people, taking care of everyone's needs (apart from my own, that is), not having boundaries. I seemed to be a textbook codependent, except that I did not get involved with alcoholics. So I just went along with what she had to say and read several of her books.

The New Codependency is one of the best ones. It has all the usual qualities of her work:

*She uses an empowering tone: of course you can make it. And to be honest, when she describes her life of a former junkie, you cannot help thinking: well, if she managed to get out of this mess, Surely I can get out of mine.
*Her book is packed with examples. The fact of the matter is, I can see problems and solutions so much more easily when I read about someone else. Examples allow me to do that.
*There is a lot of practical, down to earth advice. I cannot count the number of books I've read which describe my dreadful problems, but then leave me there with a vague "well I guess you need therapy" chapter. I hate it. Don't talk to me about my issues if you are not able to offer one hint of advice on how to solve them.

In The New Codependency, Melody Beattie tackles important concepts she wrote about before (boundaries, taking care of oneself, deprivation, control...), but with a higher level of maturity . Because she does not go back to the basics, I would advise not to read this book without reading first her earlier work. If you have, then it provides additional hindsight and a wiser point of view.

There are also new ideas. She insists to de-stigmatize codependency, explaining that it is just "normal behaviours, plus", that it is just a stage of grief - and I must say I find this new idea really interesting. There is a chapter about nurturing that I liked - she did not write about it earlier because she did not know what it was. And there is a whole section about emotions that I found really useful - I am one of these folks who have difficulties simply feeling.
