Well Written Instructional Book

I'm on work assignment out of the US and could not access YouTube for video tutorials on rebuildable atomizers & coils. This book is great it has given me a lot to learn and provide excellent instructions. I've been through sections multiple times learning on each review. Very well written. About the Author
Don Ahrens is Professor Emeritus at Modesto Junior College in Modesto, California. The best-selling author of two Cengage Learning texts, Professor Ahrens received the Textbook and Academic Authors Association's McGuffey Longevity Award for the 9th Edition of his market-leading METEOROLOGY TODAY. He has influenced countless professionals in the field of atmospheric science as well as hundreds of thousands of students who use his books to better understand weather and climate. In 2007, the National Weather Association awarded Professor Ahrens a lifetime achievement award for these accomplishments.

Perry Samson is currently a professor in the Department of Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space Sciences at the University of Michigan. Samson holds an Arthur F. Thurmond Professorship in recognition of "outstanding contributions to undergraduate education" and is recipient of the university's Teaching Innovation Prize. Professor Samson annually leads a team of undergraduate students to study the formation of supercell thunderstorms in the Great Plains. A "sexed up", but good basic meteorology textbook

This is a repackaged version of Ahren's Meteorology textbook, with a stronger focus on extreme weather. Pretty much ALL the examples and applications are focused on storms and other extreme events. This may make the book more palatable to some students, though an aspiring meteorologist should probably stick with the "Scientists and Engineers" version of Ahren's original book. Like his other work, the photos and diagrams are superb, and the explanation is very clear. The examples of historical extremes are also greatly increased.

The "Climate" side of the book is just one chapter, with a short section at the very end about how climate change might affect extreme weather. Ahrens makes it very clear that while there may be some dramatic changes, existing Science doesn't really tell us what will happen. I found the treatment of climate science to be very cautious and appropriately mainstream (shouldn't introductory textbooks be mainstream?). The low reviewer apparently doesn't live on a planet where scientific consensus is a reasonable guide to thought. On Earth, this is quite good basic Meteorology book.

Expensive substandard book

I already purchased the book from Pr.Dr. Ahrens "Meteorology Today": An Introduction to Weather, Climate, and the Environment, 9th Edition. I had a poor opinion of that book. The book Extreme weather and climate is still outrageously expensive ($171) it is heavy (508 pages) and it has no equations. This book presents meteorology like a pseudo-science as it used to be in the nineteenth century. Just looking at page 140 of the book there is an issue: Figure 5.25 shows altocumulus floccus and not altocumulus castellanus. The author apparently ignores the definitions from the International Cloud Atlas. As a teacher it is his duty to give the official definition and if he deviates from it, he must say so. A castellanus is a cloud having a shape of a tower and not a ball and usually, castellanus form a continuous line. It is again a book of poor quality and not worth its price. Again, I remind that Pr.Dr. Ahrens was professor at Modesto Community college.

Good but with some obvious mistakes

The book is balanced between the early and later years of the band's career, unless other written about bands (like Nicholas Schaffner's A Saucerful Of Secrets, for example, that deal more with early Pink Floyd) yet contains some silly mistakes.

One is the already mentioned about a quarrel in a 1980 gig. In a sentence of the book says it was between frey and Felder but in the next seems to involve Frey and Henley. Another flaw is quotting Don Felder appearing on the Eagles' maiden debut album, when everybody knows he didn't become a member until their third. Next mistake (though apparently unnoticed by most readers of the book) is on the back cover. Marc Shapiro declares the band reunited in 1994 to tour 'the stadiums of the USA'. Petty nationalism or what? THe HFO tour also went overseas so his quote is wrong.

Besides that, the book is enjoyable and well documented, in my humble opinion, though it quottes a lot of the HFO documental. I still find strange that those still in this come-and-go group didn't bother collaborating with Dhapiro and only those who by then were ex members(Meisner and Leadon) did. The central section of the book feature a few pages full of photos of the band mostly in concert that will delight every Eagles fan.

In a nutshell - an interesting but imperfect chornicle of the Eagles' career. I know nobody's perfect but the three mistakes listed above would have been so easy to correct since they're so obvious.

Good summary but some questions do arise.

This book is nice light read on one of the more popular bands from the 1970's. It neatly discusses each members bio and what abilities they brought to the table. You really get a good feel for each members personality.
However, there are a few errors in this brief summary. In the first few pages, there was an incident over playing at a benefit for Senator Cranston. One sentence says it was between Glenn Frey and Don Felder. However, the next sentence says it was Henley. Whereas the subsequent sentences seem to indicate that the argument was between Frey and Felder, it shows that the editing was pretty careless.
Also, Mr. Shapiro states in the intro that he was only able to interview Randy Meisner directly for this book. As you read on, there are plenty of comments from the other members. It seems as if Mr. Shapiro derived his comments from alot of second hand sources. Several of these sources could very well have been taken out of context especially since Mr. Shapiro casually acknowledges these references at the beginning.
Finally, Mr. Shapiro glosses over Glenn Frey's solo career too quickly. Whereas Glenn's solo work was not as strong as Don Henley's, he did have a few top selling singles such as The Heat Is On, You Belong To The City, and Smugglers Blues. What about his acting roles in Miami Vice? This is hardly mentioned.
None the less the discussion about the antimosity within the band and the sluggish pace of the recording sessions were presented very well. One can really get a feel that it is not easy being in a rock n roll band. In general, this book does its job.

Hmmmmm

Being an avid Eagles fan I have over the years picked up just about everything available that allows me to learn a little more of the guys whose music I cherish. When I purchase a book I would expect it to be well researched and perhaps contain information gleaned from the Horse`s mouth. This book seems to have been written after the author watched Hell Freezes Over as he quotes liberally from a video which and correct me if I`m mistaken, virtually every Eagles fan has seen multiple times!?! Other quotes, stories and ditties are common knowledge to Eagles fans, or available by reading web sites, articles, etc. Therefore whilst mildly enjoyable, the nature of the material renders this publication superfluous unless you are only mildly interested in the Eagles. I believe a better read is the Marc Eliot, "To the Limit" slightly more sensational and some people say inaccurate, but better than The Long Run by some.

Concise Review of Clinical Laboratory Science

This book has VERY brief outlines of each area of Clinical Lab Science. Unfortunately it doesn't have indepth descriptions that are necessary in order to do well on multiple choice exams. I recommend this as a supplement to Prentice Hall Q&A Review of Med Tech/CLS (#0838503403), which has very detailed descriptions.

Must have for MLT students!

I am the Program Director for a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) Program. I require this book for my students to use when they are doing their clinical rotations. It provides a quick, concise outline of each of the laboratory departments. My students love it for a quick review before starting each department. They also love the questions at the end of each chapter, not only does Hubbard give them the right answer but also the rationale behind the answer.

Typos and mistakes galore ***DO NOT BUY***

I used the first edition of this book years ago to study for my MLT exam. That edition was a wonderful tool to prepare for the registry exam. With the first edition having such a good reputation in my mind, I decided I would purchase the second edition to help prepare for the MLS exam. I was SHOCKED at how many errors are in the new edition. First off, there are typos on almost every page. These kinds of errors I could have probably lived with, but the blatant false information, I could not. The first of these I found was just a few pages into the book, where it began to discuss the electromagnetic spectrum. It stated that, "Gamma rays and x-rays have very long wavelengths..." followed by, "Violet light has the longest wavelength of the visible spectrum..." This is completely WRONG! Needless to say, errors like this one removed all my confidence in using this book as a study guide.

Adults are generally absent, except for a few teachers who matter. Flan's beautiful friend, Natasha, is worth close attention. Handler's writing is witty and perceptive, especially as schools and society are parodied, and he makes clever use of vocabulary and study questions. But as a brutal murder unfolds and lives are ruined, the "wonderful, wicked fun" promised by the book jacket faded for this reviewer. The novel has been optioned for film, so expect to see it on the screen, a tragedy larger than the Othello Flan's drama club is staging. An adult young-adult first novel set in a San Francisco high school. Based on an actual California murder and already optioned by the producer of As Good As It Gets, the story centers on a high school clique, The Basic Eight. Narrating is Flannery Culp (culp as in blameworthy, Flannery as in O'Connor), a gifted senior and editor of the school paper, now flunking calculus, who is transcribing her Journal of a Woman Wronged in order to explain how it is that shes been accused of leading a Satanic cult into murdering a teacher, as well as a fellow student, during a madcap drugfest fueled by absinthe, gin, and rum. Also on hand is Dr. Eleanor Tert, a therapist putting her own obtuse interpretation on the events told by Flan, although Tert is so parodistic that she (and pop psychologist Peter Pusher) may he a figment of Flan's imagination. Flan looks up to Natasha Hyatt as the most self-assured creature in Roewer High School, a girl who does everything with a panache worthy of Cyrano. The other clique members are female except for budding chef Gabriel, a black who falls for Flan. Flan has just returned from a trip to Italy during which she wrote mash letters to Adam State, though, on her return, it seems that Adam will have little to do with her, especially since she's going out with Douglas, who turns out to be gay. When Adam does make a play for Flan, who sees herself as a dumpy virgin, and then drops her, her jealousy leads to Adam's slaying during a weekend drinking party. Did Flan kill Adam? You're not quite sure, up almost until the second murder, whether this is an exercise in schoolgirl ironies or a serious novel. Will high-schoolers love the confusion? I agree with the New Yorker (for once!)

The New Yorker called this one of the best first novels of the year, and I wholeheartedly agree. I read this book awhile ago, and I've been watching, with amusement, the love-hate relationship that people are having with it on this site. What seems clear is that some people are completely misunderstanding this novel. To call it shallow, silly and stupid is to insult the narrator, not the book. I think Handler does a splendid job of hiding a gripping story in between the lines of his character's diary--a character who is, after all, a high school girl, and it needs to be read twice, not because it's William Shakespeare but because there's a twist ending which makes you go back and see how well the author planned the whole thing out. This novel isn't for everyone--only for people intelligent and engaged enough to tell the narrator from the author. (And no, just for the record, I'm not the author's friend, agent, whatever...)

Well, it won't be an Oprah Book!

. . . but anyone who loves black comedy should read it -- twice. At first, this book seems like it's just going to be a wild romp through high school -- complete with kids who throw lavish dinner parties in sculpture gardens and drink cappuccino at coffee bars with names like Bean and Nothingness or Death Before Decaf. Only hitch is, we already know that the seemingly sweet ("fat", dowdy, lovesick) anti-heroine, Flannery Culp, has been convicted of the Satanic murder of her crush, Adam State in one of the media events of the century. How could this happen? The rest of the book is a puzzle, and we get it in pieces. From Dr. Eleonor Tert (a formerly drug-addicted flight attendant turned guru), Winnie Moprah (no relation, I'm sure), and even Guiness Book-reciting Flora Habstadt (who, Flannery assures us, was never one of the Basic Eight). And especially, from Flannery, who interrupts her perpetual prison solitaire game to explain how her love notes to Adam, experimentation with absinthe (Poe's drug of choice), her calculus teacher's command to "do something" (surely he didn't mean murder), and particularly, her coffee dates with the glamorous Natasha lead to . . . well, read it and find out.

I think I'm in love with Daniel Handler

Having read the first eight Lemony Snicket books to my daughter, it occurred to me that the literary output of the author's legal, literary, and social representative, Daniel Handler, might be equally delightful. I was not disappointed. *The Basic Eight* is a gem of a book. It grows on you as you read, building eventually into a book that cannot be put down--particularly toward the end of October in the narrative--and it leaves you thinking about it long after you've read the last page.

Mr. Handler, moreover, is a wonderful writer. The plotting of the book is masterful, and the pages are littered with beautiful, apt phrases/sentences--pearls, one might say--which one wants to linger over--over which one wants to linger. (For example, on p. 280: "I craned my neck to see who this person was, raised by wolves in some San Francisco wilderness and finally escaping by public transportation.")

Some reviewers have complained of inconsistencies in the narrative over the figure of Natasha--I'll not be more specific, as this isn't a spoiler. But, while I haven't reread the book to verify that everything is thus explicable, I think the point is that the whole story is being told through Flan's rather unreliable perspective. Surely that is explanation enough?
