For a change of pace, he accepts the leading male role in the school play, to the delight of co-narrator "Bo" Vine, the stage manager, and the dismay of Chloe, who, as usual, is the star. The wallflower/football hero/ prom queen triangle plays out, with Bo becoming increasingly svelte as she learns to stage-manage her own life, and Kyle learning the proper way to act both on and off the stage. But just as the story seems about to reach the classic payoff, Strasser (The Accident) gives it an unexpected and refreshing twist. Bo may not get her man, but she does get the last word. Strasser's acknowledgment of enduring truths becomes all the more palatable for being so engagingly presented. Ages 12-up.

Grade 7 Up?Awkward senior Bovita Vine, nicknamed "Bo," specializes in managing the school plays from her favorite theater seat, the catwalk. Her work is crucial to the success of any production, but she has always avoided the spotlight. Now, she has a crush on Kyle, a football hunk whose career is cut short by a knee injury, whose cookie-cutter perfect girlfriend Chloe always has a leading role. The plot is old, and Strasser has used the character types before?demanding rich girls with big houses, accomplished smart girls, decent jocks reluctantly open to growth opportunities, and musicians who have learned about life?but the author's inimitable humor and sure grasp of high school sociometrics freshens them. Teens will be amused by the secretive pizza franchise based in the boys' restroom. They will probably accept that someone might want to break into a prison, and they will certainly recognize the PINS (Persons In Need of Supervision) who live to rattle teachers. Although the revolving first-person point of view (chapters alternate between Kyle and Bo) may be confusing to some readers, those who stay with the story will profit from Strasser's study of developing relationships. Told in engaging first-person narratives that alternate between Bo and Kyle, the novel has both teens gradually growing toward better self-realization. Witty, intense dialogue and a cast of mostly believable characters lend authenticity to the school scenario. A few notes fall flat: there is Kyle's ridiculous view of his stepmother and baby stepbrother (whom he refers to as "It" ), for example; also, the football star's placement in "Pinhead" classes for students needing extra supervision seems an artificial entertainment device even though the Pinhead characters ring true. it was great!but......

I liked How I Changed My Life by Todd Strasser alot. It is about a girl named Bolita Vine (Bo for short) who is a shy kind of student. She isn't very popular and isn't known around school much. She just goes to class and her theatre group. Her theatre group is mainly her life. She spends most of her time sitting on the cat walk above stage. But then one day she decides to change. She changes her self image from the hair she had since she was in 3rd grade to the new high school looking hair-do. people finally start to notice her after she loses a few pounds and changes her self image.She has always had a major crush on the former football captain, Kyle Winthrop. He espically never notices her since he has the great and most perfect and popular Chole for a girlfriend. But when Kyle and Chole's relationship starts to dicentigrate afte Klye's knee injury, they feel like the world is falling apart. It is a very eciting book! It can really boost a teen's self esteem. The only reason I gave this book four stars is because they talk about some mature types of things and they very often use foul language. But if that doesn't bother you, read it!

I like the way it was written in the first person but the person changed by section, it gives you the view of what they are both thinking and gives you that edge where you know where they both are coming from.

Like the famous godfather of teen movies, John Hughes, Todd Strasser has captured what it's like to be a teenager in the 1990s (opposed to the '80s) with problems surrounded by the cliquey teen caste system. In this book, Todd Strasser introduces his first of the Time Zone High trilogy (opposed to John Hughes's Shermer High quartet), with the chubby and drama queen, Bolita "Bo" Vine and the handsome and injured Kyle Winthrop. Bo and Kyle are from opposite ends of the social pool. Bo is a smart, calm misfit who most likely be with the rebels and weirdos, while Kyle is a brave, hunky jock, who's knee is injured, and who is most likely invited to all the good parties by the rich and popualr students.
The action starts there.
The fall play is starting and Bo is, as usual, the stage manager, although she'd rather be center stage. Pretty shadowed, she hides with her Gothy bud and her artist-cute friend on the catwalk in the auditorium. Bo is tired of being the way she is--when she finds out Kyle is what she wants. Kyle is tired of sitting out, watching the games and being his pretty, smart and popular girlfriend, Chloe Frost's little puppet, not doing what he wants. So he does something rebellous--he signs up for the school play.
Bo and Kyle clash a lot while she babysits his half-brother, and they both go swimming--she to work out, him to get away and exercise his legs. When Bo changes her entire look from a drab, sulky look to a pretty, gorgeous look, she tries to win Kyle over, but it's not that easy. Kyle still has major feelings for Chloe, even if she is a real ... and she's always being the lead in the plays. Bo is lovestruck.
This book is a typical, but comedic, story about high school love from different social stratesphere. It cycles the life of two teens, who are different but have the same problems. It's a cross between Pretty in Pink and Sixteen Candles--but the outcome is not going to be so fair. Read this. It's amazing. It's like the John Hughes movies-turned-books.

Every Bit As Good as the First Volume

The "Reconquista" story continues is this second omnibus volume, and, once again. I am left at the edge of my seat wondering what this second change in the story from the anime heralds (unlike in my review of the first volume, I'll not spoil it here). As usual, Saito isn't quite as much of an idiot, Louise isn't quite as cruel, but the Reconquista storyline is better developed.

I still can't quite get over the art. The characters just don't look right (except Tabitha). But I've still preordered the next volume, so it's still good.

This episode gets all the stars!

This episode gets all the stars! If you’ve been with the series this far, you’re going to want to run and get this installment. This is the one where Patrick’s world is rocked when he realizes that the unthinkable has happened and he has fallen in love with his husband.

In this episode Patrick gets romantic:

"Your mouth is where my d*** wants to go to die."

Will gets what he’s always wanted:

"So I’ve had a version of this one fantasy since I was really young…"

And we, the readers, get to see these two work through it all.

First though, let’s all stand up and cheer as Ryan appears to have made good on his promise to leave town. Will has finally come to realize how bad Ryan was for him and how dysfunctional their relationship really was. He also sees how that relationship has caused even more trouble with the issues his mother and uncle have and have been projecting onto him. As clueless and as much of a pushover as Will has been, he is really starting to come into his own here. He is once again asserting himself with his family and he is growing more confident in his ability to direct his own life. The vulnerability and trust he shows when he is with Patrick is a far cry from the Will we have seen previously and he really grew on me in this episode. He is still a bit oblivious, but it is not all through his own fault anymore. Will relies and Patrick’s bluntness and he won’t ever assume that Patrick has feelings that he hasn’t expressed. Now on to Patrick.

Have I mentioned in prior reviews how much I love Patrick? Of course I did and I love him even more after this. He’s moving right up the list of my favorite m/m characters. Patrick is still Patrick, snarky and mostly sure of himself, which doesn’t make for the best bedside manner and doesn’t help matters when trouble arises at work. This installment, however, really focused on his feelings and his acceptance that he loves Will. He is struggling with those feelings, knowing that he told Will early on that there is no chance for a relationship and Will has accepted that. Now, Patrick dies just a little inside whenever the future divorce is mentioned. He accepts that he has broken their agreement, but is torn between letting Will know, or keeping quiet and allowing Will to move on and have the freedom to figure out how he wants to live his life after the whole Ryan mess.

Patrick opens up to Will with further details about his past abuse and Will vows to himself to keep Patrick close even after they are no longer married. Patrick may not have been able to find the words to tell Will how he feels, but he did manage to find a song. I’m old enough to remember the song Patrick plays for Will and it is one of the sappiest of 1970’s sappy love songs, but take a look at the lyrics and you’ll see how Patrick was baring his soul to Will.

Now regardless of the title, this isn’t all mushy, yearning. We were promised kink early on and this episode delivers. Those kinks Patrick expressed a fondness for, breath play and spanking, all play an integral part in Will’s secret fantasies and Patrick is more than willing to indulge in every one of them. The sex scenes were incredibly hot and kinky, yet still incredibly sweet.

Yes this is a serial, so I shouldn’t be shocked, but the authors leave it all off with an incredibly evil cliffie. I wouldn’t put it past Kimberly to have had something to do with what goes down, but the authors have set the scene for the penultimate installment, Meet the Mob, and the end of March cannot come soon enough for me!

I can't fight my feelings over this. #Love

This is the fourth episode in a serial novel, and should be read in sequence. I've read the first three and while the romance was slow to build--it truly began in the third episode--it is in full force now. While technically a novella, it's over 40K words--so it's a juicy read that'll keep you occupied for hours.

Summary of the past three books: Will and Patrick have lived in the honeymoon suite of the Tallgrass Hotel in Healing South Dakota ever since their drunken "I Do"s in Vegas in early November. It's now the beginning of January and they have finally consummated their marriage--twice. They cannot get a quickie divorce because doing so will cause Will to lose control of the Molinaro Trust--former mafia money that he has funneled into Good Works, a multimillion dollar humanitarian foundation. Patrick had lost his staff position in Atlanta and is now the chief neurosurgeon in the new Healing Hospital that Good Works has funded. Will had an emotionally abusive partner, Ryan, whose callous phone break-up triggered Will's Vegas bender, and Will's a recovering alcoholic and diabetic that Patrick has managed to keep healthy and sober for their entire marriage (barring the wedding night!).

In this episode, FIGHT THEIR FEELINGS, that's exactly what's going on. Will and Patrick have finally become sexually active, much to their mutual delight. Will has a lot of baggage to unload regarding sex, in part because his and Ryan's sex life was horrendous and in other part because his family has rather peculiar ideas about sex, and homosexuality.

Will felt guilty having relations with a person whom he didn't "love" but Patrick is someone that he does love--though he holds back from hoping/wishing/praying that they have a future together. Patrick continues to make it clear that he's only sticking around until they can manage to get divorced. But that's because Patrick doesn't want to admit that he's hopelessly in love with Will.

See, because he's fighting his feelings...

This is a real emotion-driven episode with both Will and Patrick airing their vulnerabilities and asking for absolution in the only way they can. I liked it so, so much. Also, the sexytimes. GAH! Smoking hot and not skimping on the deets. Expect a bit of kink to make an appearance. (I don't consider that a spoiler as it's part of the disclaimer at the front of the book.)

The connections deepen. Will and Patrick build strong bonds that both satisfy and frighten them. And, of course, just when I think these guys are FINALLY on track, well, Will's family manages to screw it all up. Again. Perhaps.

Dan Hill's "Sometimes When We Touch" has QUITE SERIOUSLY been haunting me ever since I finished this episode. That song, that freaking song that always brings tears to my eyes, pretty much sums up Patrick's feelings for Will. So, yeah, I've been filled to the brim with melancholy, bittersweet, sentimental, impossible love for three days now. Thanks Leta and Alice.

As the series goes, it's just getting more and more delicious. Can't wait for the next episode.

I can not get enough!!!

OH. MY. GOSH!!! I have been waiting for this continuation to the serial for what feels like forever. Now that I have it, I WANT MORE!!! Seriously. It is not nice to keep me waiting! (Yeah, yeah. I know the definition of serial...but STILL!!!) lol

Will and Patrick have finally decided to let themselves relax a little. They truly begin spending time together and finding that they like the other person. Will had a tough past with Ryan, but he is finally starting to understand that his relationship with Ryan was not what he thought. He is realizing what a kind, generous, caring lover really is...in Patrick. The guys are starting to fall head over heels with each other, but both are afraid to admit it because they think the other doesn't want it. Men.

The story is brilliantly written. I am completely engrossed, and love the way the authors write both characters. I am able to see what makes each of them tick. I can't wait for the next Episode. Meeting the Mob is going to be interesting for sure! Thank god #6 is called Will and Patrick's Happy Ending, or else I would be spending all my time worrying until it came out! This is fabulous!

comparing this book to two other Goddard Blythe books

I own three books by Sally Goddard Blythe: this one, Reflexes, Learning, and Behavior, and Assessing Neuromotor Readiness for Learning. I will be reviewing all three books, since I spent a lot of time trying to figure out which book would help me. Since they are not inexpensive, perhaps I can save someone a bit of money and time.

This is the third book I have purchased by this author, and I like it the least of the three I own. When I first learned that this book was being published (August 2014), I was excited about it because I have found few books that address retained reflexes in adults.

When it arrived, I spent a lot of time comparing the content of it to the other two Goddard Blythe books I mentioned above. I was *quite* disappointed to discover that MUCH of the material in this book was word for word content from her book Assessing Neuromotor Readiness for Learning. In this book, there are tests to check for retained primitive reflexes in children and adults. The adult testing section appeared to be almost exactly the same content as the tests for children above the age of seven in the Assessing Neuromotor Readiness for Learning text.

Needless to say, I felt like I had been cheated out of good money because so much of the material in this "new" book was verbatim from her other books. Even at the discounted Amazon price of $85 (publisher price is $95), the duplicate content in this book made this book ridiculously overpriced.

So why did I keep the book? It had new material that was useful enough that I thought I should keep it. Assessing Neuromotor Readiness for Learning focused on three reflexes, while this book focused on four reflexes. (It added content on the Moro Reflex). It also had photographs of the initial testing position and position after testing, which was an improvement on the stick figures in the testing section in Reflexes, Learning, and Behavior. (I do wish, though, that the photographs were bigger, in color, and clearer.) Also, this book had new information on the vestibular system, which I don't believe is in the other two books mentioned above.

If my local library had this book available, I would have returned it for a refund. But, as I said, there was just enough new information for me to want it on my shelf.

This second installment tackles the frenzy of the latest U.S. presidential election and its ripple effect into the quaint hamlet of Doolittle Falls. Sarah spends her time managing the personal dramas of her deadbeat brother, absent dad, and secretive best friend, while worrying about the suspicious partnership between fully fledged Heroes and powerful politicians. Though the cast of characters are encouragingly diverse, the protagonists suffer from too little development, and readers will be left craving more about these talented teens and their unique powers. Sarah takes steps to explore her own skills, but only when her male crush (a weather-working Hero named Sam) encourages her, at all other times remaining fearful of her abilities. Disappointingly, this volume fails to carry the spirit of The Misshapes: The Coming Storm (Polis, 2014), in part because there are frustratingly few details until late into the book regarding corrupt corporation PeriGenomics or of reported supervillain Lady Oblivion's abrupt disappearance. Teens are required to rely on the tension built up in the first novel to maintain their interest here, and new readers will not find any clues to the story arc, past or present. The writers wait too long to move the story along, instead creating a novel-length press of the pause button. About the Author
Alex Flynn is the pseudonym for the writing team of Stuart Sherman and Elisabeth Donnelly. They met at a clandestine book club in Boston, where they broke into a fortified tower in order to discuss literature. They like garrulous Irish writers, Pushing Daisies, Axe Cop, and anything involving The Tick. Their secret lair is currently in a hollowed-out volcano in Brooklyn. In addition to cowriting The Misshapes, Donnelly is a cultural journalist who has written for The New York Times Magazine, the Boston Globe, the Los Angeles Times, The Paris Review Daily, GQ, and many others. Sherman is a bioethicist, health policy analyst, and a former contestant on the game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?

Needs a new editor and a faster-paced story

The editor of this book should be fired immediately. There are grammatical errors. There are spelling errors. There is even a place where they write about one of the students passing out papers and then a paragraph later the other students wonder why he wasn't at school that day. My son is a 6th grader and we are always trying to find books that he will like that are neither too childish nor too adult-themed. These books are right on the verge and I decided to let him read them. The first one was pretty good. I can't even get through this one.
