Thorough policy history

This book is written with the help of three people who were active participants in the fight for the BWCA. It is well written and thoroughly documented. It is biased in that the authors wanted increased protection of the BWCA and provides inside information from the pro-protection side of the fight. Even so, they were able to remove themselves enough from the story to write an accurate account.
The fight is a very interesting story and parallels many other environmental fights throughout the country.
Anyone looking for a monograph concerning Minnesota history, legislative history, environmental history, or just a good read this is a highly recommended read.

Troubled Waters.

An excellent book about the creation of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. I would highly recommend it for anyone interested in natural resources and/or recreation. It gives a good history and as a result an understanding of the hard feelings still fostered by some in the communities that were impacted.

The book definitely has a spin from the Friends of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness interest group. Looking beyond that it is still an excellent book.

Great book! Beautifully written

Great book! Beautifully written. I highly recommend it for the wonderful insights yet easy to understand language. Covers the foundations of Coaching, but would be a good read for anyone interested in understanding more about how the brain works, the benefits of communication and how we can reach our full potential.

Do not be misled

After reading a few chapters, I found myself asking what the real purpose of this book was. I assume most of the people looking to purchase this book are hoping to understand superchargers, how they work, what they can do for your build, and what you can do to tap into some more power. Upon reading the reviews I figured that's what I would get with this book, but unfortunately that assumption was wrong.

First, unless you would enjoy watching a History Channel special on the progression of supercharging for the last century, you will not enjoy this book. The author spends far too many pages and chapters on the history of the blowers, specifically those on American motors, and rarely touches on much else until the last chapter. Hell, for every page he spent detailing the design and function of a certain type of supercharger, there was at least 7 or 8 pages worth of worthless historical information about it. Don't get me wrong, the history is interesting and sometimes worthwhile to mention, but for a book like this the history should be kept to a minimum and science/application of the ideas should be thoroughly explained instead. Most of us spend our time in the garage, not the library.

The author also seems to ramble on, delving into the realms of physics and mechanics that go far past the level needed for thorough understanding. It made many parts frustrating and difficult to read. The last chapter was the only one worthwhile. The author (almost reluctantly it seems) explains how motors respond to supercharging and what can be done to improve power and efficiency. Do not let the other reviews convince you otherwise. There are better books out there and for a better price, especially if your specific application involves something other than domestic V8's.

Excellent beginners book into the fun of electronic lab

Yannis Tsividis gives us a great beginners book into electronics. I found the instruction very concise and though it seems basic to the casual eye, is extremely helpful in learning from the beginning...where anyone should start, right? I learned about nor gates which was extremely fun and interesting, including trying to create my own schematic of a closed circuit relay. Once you can master the basics you are ready to go on to more advanced electronics, which can include building your very own radio! The diagrams and overall instruction in this book are layed out easy to understand. I have a vast background in Geology but want to further my horizons by learning other fields, and with looking into electronics I found this book to be a good starting point.

A good book, but very overpriced!

I used this book for an Intro to Circuits class. I found it to be well-written although somewhat verbose and lacking in math explanation. Overall, it was helpful for the class. However, my classmates and I all felt that the book is horrendously overpriced. It is short, paperback, and black-and-white--There is no reason for it to cost what it does. The types of projects in this book are easily found online for free. Many students wound up photocopying the book and returning it, because they simply felt ripped off. I certainly don't endorse violating copyright laws, but I definitely suggest that you check out free tutorials or less expensive books before paying $50-60 for this.

Overall, good book, but avoid buying it if you can. The material is very basic and you can easily share with your lab partner or find the same tutorials online.

In the mid-nineteenth century, James Wickham was a wealthy farmer with a large estate in Cutchogue, Long Island. His extensive property included a mansion and eighty acres of farmland that were maintained by a staff of servants. In 1854, Wickham got into an argument with one of his workers, Nicholas Behan, after Behan harassed another employee who refused to marry him. Several days after Behan's dismissal, he crept back into the house in the dead of night. With an axe, he butchered Wickham and his wife, Frances, and fled to a nearby swamp. Behan was captured, tried, convicted and, on December 15, became one of the last people to be hanged in Suffolk County. Local historians Geoffrey Fleming and Amy Folk uncover this gruesome story of revenge and murder.

About the Author
Geoffrey Fleming has worked at a wide variety of museums and historical societies on Long Island, and has served on several boards and committees. Fleming is author or co-author of 12 books. Amy Folk is the collections manager for the Southold Historical Society. She is the co-author of Hotels and Inns of Long Island's North Fork.

Too much useless information

The title of this book really grabbed me, as my two favorite subjects are local history and true crime. I was very disappointed that so much of the book was spent on info that was not relevant to the story, such as a whole paragraph that just listed every paper in which this crime was reported, or how much attention was given to geography of the area, which played no part in the crime and was not necessary for the reader to know.

Great True Crime Story!

Really interesting and suspenseful book about a double murder. It had everything you could want in this type of book - suspense, drama, and a cast of characters that include everyone from the attorney general of the State of New York to a humble servant boy. Whether you are familiar with Long Island or not, you get a strong sense of the place and what it was like in 1854 when the murders took place. One of my favorite parts was reading the final section and finding out what happened to all the people involved after the trial concluded. Thoroughly satisfying.

I acquired the book while visiting Cutchogue. The book provided an in depth look at a notorious local murder that occurred during the 1850s on Long Island. Anyone with an interest in 19th century crime or Long Island history will find this book well-worth the reading.

About the Author
Douglas A. Luke is currently a Professor at Washington University, George Warren Brown School of Social Work. He directs the Center for Tobacco Policy Research, has led the doctoral program at St. Louis University School of Public Health, and has long served on the key community health behavior study decision at the National Institute of Health.

In 1990 he received his Ph.D. in clinical/community psychology with a minor in quantitative psychology from the University of Illinois. While at the University of Illinois, he studied under a number or notable quantitative scientists and authors, including Phipps Arabie (co-author of Three-way Scaling & Clustering), Stanley Wasserman (editor of Advances in Social Network Analysis), Larry Jones, Larry Hubert, and Ledyard Tucker. His 1991 article, Expanding Behavior Setting Theory: Setting Phenotypes in a Mutual Help Organization, was recently selected as one of the ten most influential methodology articles published in the first 25 years of the American Journal of Psychology.

a model introduction to a complicated topic

Sage university papers on quantitative applications are presented as brief and inexpensive treatments of specialized topics in statistics and data analysis. Some are well worth the price, while some leave you wishing you used the money towards acquiring a full-length treatise or textbook. If you need to learn about multilevel modeling on your own, Douglas Luke's Multilevel Modeling is worth much more than its price, especially if you buy it from Amazon.com, because it is a model of compositional economy in addressing a complex idea, and of what a truly introductory textbook should be. Luke maintains focus, precision, and masterful clarity in a fashion that is rarely encountered among books which claim to be "An Introduction to ... " a topic as specialized, intricate, and novel as is multilevel statistical modeling. Luke defines the terms more lucidly than some of the most popular full-sized books which aim to introduce multilevel analysis (and which still leave the reader mired in ambiguity). The author does not attempt to impart any gratuitous complexity to his exposition and manages to integrate textual clarity with statistical notation and equations, figures, and tables which are equally clear for someone who, while familiar with concepts beyond one-variable statistics and simple linear regression and ANOVA, has never studied or engaged in this type of data analysis or research design before. You may need to proceed to thicker treatises to make a thorough analysis and find out how to use your favorite software, but if you begin with one or more of those and find the topic still unclear in its elements - either the big picture or the basic details - you will find Luke's 78 pages (including reference to data online) enlightening.

Masterfully succinct
By not a natural
Given the brevity imposed by Sage's little, green paperbacks, Luke's book is remarkably informative. This is especially true of models with more than three levels. Though Luke devotes only four pages to these more complex models, his examples are among the best I've seen. They lend credibility to the oft-repeated, but sometimes hard to see judgment that three-level models are almost as easy to specify, estimate, and understand as two-level models.

Though most analysts are primarily interested in fixed effects, which makes perfect sense, interpretation of random effects can be instructive. Thanks to Luke's examples, random effects make a good deal more sense after reading his book. It's to his credit that he accomplishes this in an informal, almost off-handed way. Luke is not the sort of author who takes himself or his subject too seriously -- nothing deadeningly grave here -- and his presentation benefits from his relaxed approach.

Even if a reader is benefiting from one of the much longer texts that are currently available, this inexpensive little book is worth buying and looking over. Luke has the gift of succinctness -- saying a great deal with unusual clarity while using remarkably few words -- making his book a pleasure to read. If you've been away from multilevel analysis for awhile and are just getting back into, Luke's presentation will provide a fine review.

Good content, but not worth it

The content is good, and writing is clear. People interested in this book are probably interested in using the methods right away. This is made difficult by the companion website gone missing, and the lack of response from the author.

In the end, don't bother with this book. The university of Bristol has an open course with just as good explanations, and full code in R, Stata, and HLM. Just search LEMMA Multilevel in Google.
