Concise Review of Clinical Laboratory Science

This book has VERY brief outlines of each area of Clinical Lab Science. Unfortunately it doesn't have indepth descriptions that are necessary in order to do well on multiple choice exams. I recommend this as a supplement to Prentice Hall Q&A Review of Med Tech/CLS (#0838503403), which has very detailed descriptions.

Must have for MLT students!

I am the Program Director for a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) Program. I require this book for my students to use when they are doing their clinical rotations. It provides a quick, concise outline of each of the laboratory departments. My students love it for a quick review before starting each department. They also love the questions at the end of each chapter, not only does Hubbard give them the right answer but also the rationale behind the answer.

Typos and mistakes galore ***DO NOT BUY***

I used the first edition of this book years ago to study for my MLT exam. That edition was a wonderful tool to prepare for the registry exam. With the first edition having such a good reputation in my mind, I decided I would purchase the second edition to help prepare for the MLS exam. I was SHOCKED at how many errors are in the new edition. First off, there are typos on almost every page. These kinds of errors I could have probably lived with, but the blatant false information, I could not. The first of these I found was just a few pages into the book, where it began to discuss the electromagnetic spectrum. It stated that, "Gamma rays and x-rays have very long wavelengths..." followed by, "Violet light has the longest wavelength of the visible spectrum..." This is completely WRONG! Needless to say, errors like this one removed all my confidence in using this book as a study guide.

Flannery Culp is 19, precocious, pretentiousAand incarcerated. Accused of Satanism and convicted of murder, she and her seven friends (the "Basic Eight") have been reviled and misunderstood on the Winnie Moprah Show and similar tabloid venues. So Flannery has typed up and annotated the journals of her high school years in order to tell her real story: "Perhaps they'll look at my name under the introduction with disdain, expecting apologies or pleas for pity. I have none here." Handler's sharply observed, mischievous first novel consists of Flannery's diaries from the beginning of her senior year to the Halloween murder of Adam State and its aftermath. The journals detail Flan's life in her clique of upper-middle-class San Francisco school friends, who desperately emulate adulthood by throwing dinner parties and carrying liquor flasks. Kate ("the Queen Bee"), Natasha ("less like a high school student and more like an actress playing a high school student on TV"), Gabriel ("the kindest boy in the world" and in love with Flan) and the rest begin experimenting with the hallucinogen absinthe. Squabbles once easily resolved grow deeper and darker when Natasha poisons the biology teacher who has been tormenting Flan. Should the Basic Eight turn on, and turn in, one of their own? Handler deftly keeps the mood light even as the plot careens forward, and as FlanAnever a reliable narratorAbecomes increasingly unhinged. The links between teen social life, tabloid culture and serious violence have been explored and exploited before, but Handler, and Flannery, know that. If they're not the first to use such material, they may well be the coolest. Handler's confident satire is not only cheeky but packed with downright lovable characters whose youthful misadventures keep the novel neatly balanced between absurdity and poignancy. (Apr.) Adults are generally absent, except for a few teachers who matter. Flan's beautiful friend, Natasha, is worth close attention. Handler's writing is witty and perceptive, especially as schools and society are parodied, and he makes clever use of vocabulary and study questions. But as a brutal murder unfolds and lives are ruined, the "wonderful, wicked fun" promised by the book jacket faded for this reviewer. The novel has been optioned for film, so expect to see it on the screen, a tragedy larger than the Othello Flan's drama club is staging. An adult young-adult first novel set in a San Francisco high school. Based on an actual California murder and already optioned by the producer of As Good As It Gets, the story centers on a high school clique, The Basic Eight. Narrating is Flannery Culp (culp as in blameworthy, Flannery as in O'Connor), a gifted senior and editor of the school paper, now flunking calculus, who is transcribing her Journal of a Woman Wronged in order to explain how it is that shes been accused of leading a Satanic cult into murdering a teacher, as well as a fellow student, during a madcap drugfest fueled by absinthe, gin, and rum. Also on hand is Dr. Eleanor Tert, a therapist putting her own obtuse interpretation on the events told by Flan, although Tert is so parodistic that she (and pop psychologist Peter Pusher) may he a figment of Flan's imagination. Flan looks up to Natasha Hyatt as the most self-assured creature in Roewer High School, a girl who does everything with a panache worthy of Cyrano. The other clique members are female except for budding chef Gabriel, a black who falls for Flan. Flan has just returned from a trip to Italy during which she wrote mash letters to Adam State, though, on her return, it seems that Adam will have little to do with her, especially since she's going out with Douglas, who turns out to be gay. When Adam does make a play for Flan, who sees herself as a dumpy virgin, and then drops her, her jealousy leads to Adam's slaying during a weekend drinking party. Did Flan kill Adam? You're not quite sure, up almost until the second murder, whether this is an exercise in schoolgirl ironies or a serious novel. Will high-schoolers love the confusion? I agree with the New Yorker (for once!)

The New Yorker called this one of the best first novels of the year, and I wholeheartedly agree. I read this book awhile ago, and I've been watching, with amusement, the love-hate relationship that people are having with it on this site. What seems clear is that some people are completely misunderstanding this novel. To call it shallow, silly and stupid is to insult the narrator, not the book. I think Handler does a splendid job of hiding a gripping story in between the lines of his character's diary--a character who is, after all, a high school girl, and it needs to be read twice, not because it's William Shakespeare but because there's a twist ending which makes you go back and see how well the author planned the whole thing out. This novel isn't for everyone--only for people intelligent and engaged enough to tell the narrator from the author. (And no, just for the record, I'm not the author's friend, agent, whatever...)

Well, it won't be an Oprah Book!

. . . but anyone who loves black comedy should read it -- twice. At first, this book seems like it's just going to be a wild romp through high school -- complete with kids who throw lavish dinner parties in sculpture gardens and drink cappuccino at coffee bars with names like Bean and Nothingness or Death Before Decaf. Only hitch is, we already know that the seemingly sweet ("fat", dowdy, lovesick) anti-heroine, Flannery Culp, has been convicted of the Satanic murder of her crush, Adam State in one of the media events of the century. How could this happen? The rest of the book is a puzzle, and we get it in pieces. From Dr. Eleonor Tert (a formerly drug-addicted flight attendant turned guru), Winnie Moprah (no relation, I'm sure), and even Guiness Book-reciting Flora Habstadt (who, Flannery assures us, was never one of the Basic Eight). And especially, from Flannery, who interrupts her perpetual prison solitaire game to explain how her love notes to Adam, experimentation with absinthe (Poe's drug of choice), her calculus teacher's command to "do something" (surely he didn't mean murder), and particularly, her coffee dates with the glamorous Natasha lead to . . . well, read it and find out.

I think I'm in love with Daniel Handler

Having read the first eight Lemony Snicket books to my daughter, it occurred to me that the literary output of the author's legal, literary, and social representative, Daniel Handler, might be equally delightful. I was not disappointed. *The Basic Eight* is a gem of a book. It grows on you as you read, building eventually into a book that cannot be put down--particularly toward the end of October in the narrative--and it leaves you thinking about it long after you've read the last page.

Mr. Handler, moreover, is a wonderful writer. The plotting of the book is masterful, and the pages are littered with beautiful, apt phrases/sentences--pearls, one might say--which one wants to linger over--over which one wants to linger. (For example, on p. 280: "I craned my neck to see who this person was, raised by wolves in some San Francisco wilderness and finally escaping by public transportation.")

Some reviewers have complained of inconsistencies in the narrative over the figure of Natasha--I'll not be more specific, as this isn't a spoiler. But, while I haven't reread the book to verify that everything is thus explicable, I think the point is that the whole story is being told through Flan's rather unreliable perspective. Surely that is explanation enough?

Wonderful animal set!

I just bought a set of these at a swap meet. So far, I haven't been able to stop looking at them. No doubt these are meant for kids, but the information given is scientific and thorough. Each animal is photographed several times and there is a range map showing where they live. It tells you about their habitat, what they eat, when they breed and all kinds of interesting information about animals I didn't know existed! I recommend these for anyone who loves animals, not just kids!

I has these as a kid. I loved them. My children love the outdoors and animals as much as I do so I thought that this would be a great buy for them. The pages have amazing pictures and lots of information. Could be great for school projects for the kids as well.

First Place is a journey to a better life in all four parts of your life!

This program is absolutely awesome!

What you put into it is what you will get out of it in each area of the four part person (mental, phyical, emotional and spiritual). I have been participating in this program for the last 11 weeks and I have had a much more transforming experience in my life spiritually through this bible study and the heart gripping truth to my own lifestyle choices.

This bible study book is definately the one I would do first in a class because it helps you set your mental focus on the areas you need to truly look deeply at and consider all areas that need help in making a difference in your lifestyle choices.

If you are not participating in a group, it is highly recommended in doing that. When you participate in a group you have more accountability and women or men going through the same struggles you go through. Also, you are able to confide in those people and build great realtionships that will help you know that you are not alone in this journey but you have true and loving people on the side lines encouraging you to the goal that you have set for yourself.

I first attended FIRST PLACE in the summer of 2007 and I was the biggest loser in my class of a total of 16 pounds! I did not continue living out the live-it plan as I was following in the First Place program after that summer and ended up gaining my weight back. The instructor, Carol Lewis, recommends that you make a commitment to 1 full year of this program in order to see sucess. I have made that commitment this time and I know that this the best program I have ever tried. I have truly been blessed with my FIRST PLACE 4 HEALTH group/class this session.

I have lost 12.8 pounds this session. I came to the conclusion that it wasn't so much about me putting a goal on my weight this session as it was about me changing my mentality and lifestyle choices. That is what I was focused on more this session. Of course I did not gain all of this weight in just a few days or weeks so I know that it will not come off that quickly!

If we fail to plan, we plan to fail. Let us make a commitment to ourselves that we will plan out our meals and live to the live-it plan to gain a new level in our relationship with God by giving Him FIRST PLACE where He belongs in our lives!

Can't really use for Bible Study

I bought this to use for an upcoming healthy Bible study starting at our church, but quickly realized that it was not very practical to have the Kindle version because you need to be able to fill in questions, forms, etc, in order to get the most out of the study. My lower rating has nothing to do with the content, just usability in the e-version.

Love This Book

I can't believe how much I use this book. Don't know how I got along without it. At 57 I still take piano lessons, just to keep me going back to the piano with something new. I love looking up all the new music in this book and seeing the difficulty level and recommendations for other similar works. Every composer is included and I am very impressed with the detail about all of their compositions.

Not just a teacher's resource. This book is very helpful for the adult amateur (to early advanced standing) searching for new pieces to explore. Nicely arranged by musical periods. A nice complement to Maurice Hinson's Guide to the Pianist's Repertoire (which does list advanced works).

Excellent for certain applications.

This book would be particularly useful for piano teachers or for adult students of piano who are trying to expand their repertoire. It would be less useful for an advanced pianist (which I am not), as the rating scale is too simplistic and many well-known, but very difficult, works are not included.
There is a great selection of pieces from both well-known and very obscure composers, and includes virtually every significant teaching piece that one might think of. Each piece is graded in difficulty from 1-10. The grading is not as detailed as that used by Wolters, where each piece is given a separate grade for both technical and musical difficulty, but the grading is quite accurate and helpful in selecting pieces that you can actually play, if you're not a top-notch pianist. The biggest advantage of this book over other piano repertoire books is the very extensive coverage of twentieth-century music, including even some pieces for prepared piano, so it's a good place to look for some new stuff to play to annoy your friends and neighbors.
A minor weakness of the book is the lack of headings at the top of each page, which makes it sometimes irritating to use as a reference, since you may have to page forward or backwards several pages to figure out where you are in the alphabetical listing of composers. The typesetting and page layout make it look a bit amateurish, although it is carefully edited and doesn't contain a lot of typographical errors.

About the Author
Robin Waterfield is an internationally acclaimed scholar and author, whose publications range from abstruse academic articles to children's fiction. He has worked as a lecturer, editor and publisher before taking up writing full time. He has about forty books to his credit, with most of his later work cantering on academic works aimed at intelligent lay readers. His most recent books are Xenophon's Retreat: Greece, Persia and the End of the Golden Age (Faber; Harvard) and Why Socrates Died (Faber; Norton; McLeland & Stewart). Kathryn Waterfield (Dunathan) is a writer specializing in Greek history. Formerly with the University of South Florida and the Tampa Museum of Art, she now makes her home with husband, classicist Robin Waterfield, in the remote southern Peloponnese in Greece. The Greek Myths is the Waterfields' first collaboration.

Too many errors.

It was very informative but there were a lot of errors. I understand we are all human and we make mistakes but in Chapter three tha second paragraph is repeated in the third paragraph. It's a massive publishing error that should have been caught. Errors like that turn me off of books.

Great an extremely informative - not written academically, either, which makes the content much more accessible. It's nice to see Classical Greek mythology so colorfully presented.
